The Creative Assembly's Alien Game Plans

A tweet by Ed Vaizey seems to reveal plans for an Aliens game from strategy specialists The Creative Assembly, saying: "Great visit to Creative Assembly one of UK's best developers. Now hiring for new blockbuster based on Alien." Computer and Video Games follows up on this, saying SEGA has confirmed the report, but will not be revealing genres or target platforms at this point, though they do say it is coming to consoles, and that it will be a triple-A game: "This is very much a triple-A project," Sega West boss Mike Hayes added. "We want this to be a peer to the likes of Dead Space 2." There's also word on Gamasutra from SEGA calling this a "console core game," and that they are hiring staff and building a new facility for the project: "The developer said that it is set to open a new 10,000 square foot facility in the area in aid of the game's development, and noted that it plans to have around 200 staff within the year. 160 people currently work at Creative Assembly."

MMOGs for Aliens Predators and Marines would be awesome, it has so much potential. But Terminators? Given the absurd story of that most people can't even agree in what timeframe Terminator should play. ^^
Well, future wars for Terminator series. Machines versus/vs. Humans.

You never know

I was always dreaming about TW fantasy kind of game and King Arthur actually happened. Not exactly the same but close enough from strategy point of view and absolutely great from RPG elements/story point of view.

"company of heroes: terminator" that would be awesome Allthumbsup

This seems... odd. Why would SEGA give such an important franchise to a PC-centric RTS developer with a relatively lackluster console record?

I really wish they would make a strategy remake to the original Alien that I used to play on the Commodore 64. Now, that was one scary game and one I was never able to beat.
Which one was that? Is that the one where you can fly through the space tunnel to land? It had that cool tune too.

There are two "Creative Assemblies" one in Horsham, England and one in Brisbane, Australia. This dates from before the SEGA acquisition when they had the Brisbane studio working on Medieval 2 and other titles. The Horsham based 'console' team are responsible for Viking (which was IMHO, a good game) and the Brisbane studio were responsible for Stormrise which, unfortunately, was not so good. They are very separate teams. From the news report, it's pretty clear that the Alien game is going to be developed by an expanded Horsham based console team. I've no idea what the Brisbane studio are working on but I'm sure they'll have learned from some of the mistakes in Stormrise (it's a pity that had some problems because a console RTS is a pretty novel and unusual beast)

Actually I kind of liked Viking too, although it was hardly great. It did get kind of monotonous once you learned the one specific dodge/kill move that worked in every single fight no matter the enemy.

The large-scale battles were nice, though.

Just as long as the Creative Assembly people who worked on Stormrise and Viking: Battle for Asgard are kept away, this might turn out all right.

Believe it or not but I found Viking: Battle for Asgard quite a good game and finished it as well. Must admit I've been surprised myself!

I think it was one of those moments when you want just something "different". I must admit largish scale battles were cool

As for this Alien strategy game I hoped it will be some kind of TW clone in the future (bit like King Arthur is based on fantasy) but if it's for consoles that's not very likely to be the case.

So does this put the nail in Aliens Colonial Marines coffin, for good, again? (this project originally was set to be released on the PS2 but was canceled.)

Most local govs subsidy construction of company buildings to "drag" the jobs in their area, which makes if often cheaper (after taxes) to build a new facility than renting an already built one.

Having your game leaked by a cabinet minister (and a Tory one, no less) is pretty amusing.

They're building a new facility and hiring new staff for this game? WTF... with all the layoffs in the industry you'd think there'd be plenty of space available.
