Valve Single Player Clarification

A Gabe Newell interview offers a clarification of recent comments that "Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player experience." Here's word:

I think what were trying to talk about is the fact that, not that were not doing single player games. Portal 2 was a pretty good example of what weve learned over the years in terms of how to create those experiences. Its more that we think we have to work harder in the future, that entertainment is inherently increased in value by having it be social, by letting you play with your friends, by recognizing that youre connected with other people.
[…]
Thats the thing that were trying to say, is that, single player is great but we also have to recognize that you have friends, and we wanna have that connected as well. So, its not about giving up on single player at all, its like saying, we actually think that theres a bunch of features and capabilities that we need to add into our single player games to recognize the socially connected gamer.

I think we can both agree that online forums aren't really representative of the actual weight of game-purchasing consumers; we're a unique subset of the vocal minority; the actual popularity of social games (and the existence of several high volume sites dedicated to the pursuit of achievements) contradicts the conclusions you've drawn from your relatively small sample-size.

True. Otoh, developers see Farmville and go "OMG, 100 MILLION PEOPLE PLAY A GAME THAT TOOK 5 MINUTES TO MAKE MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY LETS SWITCH ALL OUR GUYS TO MAKE THE NEXT FARMVILLE OMG !!1!!!!!"

But those 100 million people likely rarely overlap with the people who have been buying their games before. I don't think anyone on blues plays Farmville (and if you do, DON'T FUCKING ADMIT IT!) and I know a grand total of two people in general who play it, and they're both the kind of people who would NEVER play a game like HL2 or something like that.

So for a developer of HL2 to basically go "Fuck yeah, we're gonna do social shit!" and to then expect that its fanbase is going to be happy with that, is extremely peculiar. They may very well make a lot more money than they were before once they switch, but otoh, it's not that hard to see why their fans are EXTREMELY unhappy about such a switch.

With respect, this is an overreaction, and a completely unwarranted one at that. You and several others have extrapolated

"Its more that we think we have to work harder in the future, that entertainment is inherently increased in value by having it be social, by letting you play with your friends, by recognizing that youre connected with other people."

into

It's just Facebook and Twitter Integration!!

and

Fuck yeah, we're gonna do social shit!

It's absolutely mind-boggling how you got there. This isn't jump-to-conclusions-mat level, this is Olympic scale triple-jump-to-conclusions or possibly high-jump-to-conclusions.

Valve and others have said that they're going to increase the connectivity and social immersion of their games. For folks like EA it meant developing a free-to-play standalone micro-transaction-based Facebook-hosted Flash game. For Valve it will most likely mean something else.

The panic over the form that this platform will take is unwarranted, especially considering the principal subject. Valve HAS THEIR OWN PLATFORM. The social integration is most likely going to take place on/with Steam. We've seen some interesting tie-ins over the last week with YouTube integration for the replay editor for TF2 (which is fantastic, by the by. I haven't FRAPS'd a video in years, but I've been making hilarious TF2 clips to share with my friends all weekend) so who knows what forms the next steps might take.

Finally: buried within those 100 million people are millions of gamers who just haven't found their game yet. This is their gamma-ray exposure, they can Hulk-out with us in the future when they find their trigger... which they're more likely to find if they're exposed to cool new games that their friends are playing.

Social integration is a good thing. It makes us bigger as a group, it makes us more cohesive, and it means that there will be more developers working on projects, giving us more choice. The only downside here is that some folks who prefer to play alone might feel upset that there's an added feature in a game that doesn't cater to them, or that the gaming experience might be moving away from their preference of play-style. As I said before, I hope it's not the case, but if it is, the minority (no matter how vocal) will be left behind.
