U.S. Retail Gaming Sales Slip 4%

Retail video game sales slipped 4% in the U.S. in March, reports the NDP, by way of the Los Angeles Times. The software side is the root of this, as they say sales of video and computer games fell 16% to $735.4 million, compared with $875.7 million a year earlier. Hardware sales were up 12% to $494.5 million in March, driven by sales of the 3DS, Kinect, and Move controllers. The article acknowledges that the software slippage is in part explainable by the continued shift to digital distribution: "The silver lining for the game industry may be that consumers aren't cutting back their overall spending on games. Instead, they may be shifting their spending away from games and consoles sold at retails stores and toward buying "apps" for mobile devices such as Apple's iPad, playing online social games or buying games they can download to consoles or computers -- all sales that are not included in Thursday's figures."

As I said before, we are witnessing what may be the beginnings of the second gaming industry crash and all signs keep pointing into it.

The reason for this is that there are other alternative forms of entertainment, apps, which I really don't consider part of what gamers define as games. Apps, being cheap, on portable hardware and showing to be more and more competent at entertaining people is quickly becoming the greatest peril the industry faces. So either the industry changes business models or publishers will more than likely drop like flies.

So software sales dropped 16%, not 4%. And add the horrid sales of the 3DS and anyone with half a mind can see trouble in the horizon for the industry.

You guys crack me up, they are going off sales, but what new games have really come out last month? Not a whole lot. So yes, of course sales are going to be down. This scale or monitoring always kills me when people start panicking over sales that are supposedly lost when in reality there hasn’t been a whole lot out to gage sales from in the first place.
