Out of the Blue

We have a DLP television, which creates its images by reflecting a bright light off a computer chip. A couple of months ago, for some reason MrsBlue started focusing on the next time the bulb would need replacing, and got me to order a replacement. Sure enough, last night the old bulb blew out, and I was able to get the TV up and running again in a matter of minutes. The thing is that the replacement bulb took a couple of weeks to be delivered, so my better half was very wise in her advance planning. Each of the two prior bulbs lasted a few years, but having learned this lesson, I think I'll order a new one right away.

I am still using a 20" CRT TV from 1996. It still works and won't replace it until it dies/breaks.

I forgot to post yesterday that yesterday was exactly 10 years since I signed up on Blues! Wow that's a long time and doesn't seem possible. I know I don't have as many posts as others that have been here 10+ years but I still visit the site at least 5-6 times a week if not more.

Grats on 10 years... I've got you beat by several months and not only did I forget to mention my 10 year anniversary, I totally had no idea I'd even been signed up that long! Btw, I only have 20 some odd more posts than you. Bluesnews.com has been my homepage for more than 12 years (I remember it being Blue's Quake Rag!) so I visit it at least 10 times a day if not more.

You all are lucky. I've had to replace my DLP bulb once a year for the past 5 years. I didn't think Samsungs would do that, but almost like clockwork...around XMas, it dies. But, we also have 4 kids....

Had my Samsung 42" DLP for 5 years. Just gave it to the sister-in-law, and it's still running great. I think the bulbs are still around the $100 mark, but I never needed a replacement. (And now I don't have to worry about it!)

Replaced it with another Samsung, this one a 46" LED LCD. Found a great deal and couldn't pass up the bigger screen and 1080p. (DLP was only 1080i/720p) Only issue with the new screen is DVDs of old shows and non-HD broadcasts look like crap.

Aren't the bulbs super expensive? Or have they come down over the years?

I guess comparing a DLP to a LCD or similar, I would rather get a newer tv considering how far the technology has come....

I have the DLP in my garage so I can come back to it. If it is only a heat issue maybe I can customize the back end with some fans and vents to make it work.

You are lucky with the DLP bulb replacement. I planned ahead and got a replacement bulb as well...only to find out that the bulb that was sold to me, by Gateway, is a "generic" of some sorts. It works on multiple models, including mine, according to the package. I was skeptical but put it in the garage and forgot about it.

...Until my 56" Gateway DLP burned out its bulb. When I installed it, it seemed to work fine for about the first 30 minutes. Then the screen started going nuts. I turned off the TV, checked it out...and it was noticeably hotter behind the TV then usual. My only guess is that this generic bulb gives off too much heat. We replaced the whole TV with a 46" LCD, but I have the DLP in my garage so I can come back to it. If it is only a heat issue maybe I can customize the back end with some fans and vents to make it work.

The reality however is that the TV isn't made anymore, I can't find the "real" bulbs, and I know zero about DLP televisions...so there is no guarantee that heat has anything to do with it. I miss my DLP...*sniff*

I'd never heard of Jerry Lawson until last night, but the interview (here) was fascinating...really cool to see someone so interested in gaming, and to discuss it from a more technical side.
