Piranha Bytes Getting Gothic Back?

An interview on Gothicz.net talks with Mike Hoge, one of the cofounders of Piranha Bytes, who offers a surprising indication that they are to get the rights to the Gothic series back, saying: "We get the rights to Gothic back when we have finished Risen 2. Why? Because we did only sell them to our ex-publisher for a certain amount of time ;)." This is followed by a comment in German on World of Players from Michael Rüve of Piranha Bytes, who clarifies by removing clarity, stressing that Mike is not a lawyer, and saying (in English) to "take his comments with a grain of salt." He says there's no reason to comment on their contractual situation with JoWooD at this time, making the obvious point that JoWooD has enough to worry about, as they have been declared insolvent, and are currently embroiled in a lawsuit with Koch Media. He also notes that Piranha Bytes and JoWooD have no legal disagreements. Thanks Gamer's Hell.

They've already said that they are keeping both. "Two IPs are better than one".

I was thinking more along the lines of what they'd do in terms of gameplay to differentiate the two series. Gothic and Risen were basically the same in terms of gameplay and structure so having both series continue along the same route seems redundant.

I wonder what this means for Risen. Risen was basically a spiritual successor to Gothic and if they get the Gothic license back, what will they do with Risen?

Wow, someone is slow. This was known 3 years ago. If you had paid attention you'd have heard that when PB and Jowood split they had only "loaned" the Gothic name out to them. Someone isn't doing basic fact check.

Also, this interview was posted a few days ago on RPGwatch:

Slow, slow slow.

I hope this is true, Gothic 2 was my favorite of the series. 1 was great, but there was a lot of improvements everywhere in the second that everything just came together really nicely. 3 had potential, but the bugs and everything really marred the experience-someday I'll try and play it again with the community patches.

I sincerely wish PB luck, but I am not convinced they have the financial resources/development time to create a game like Gothic 2 ever again. Risen was a pale shadow of Gothic 2's breadth and we all know how the rushed to market Gothic 3 turned out.

Gothic 3 was Piranha Bytes as well. Sure, it was a "collaboration" of sorts between publisher and developer but let's not just point the finger for one of the all time great bug-ridden releases and code optimization at the publisher.

Why would you want it back after the ass-raping that JoWood has done to the franchise?

Just stay with Risen.

I just wish they would make something new.
Gothic 1 was awesome, to me it's still the best game I've probably played so far, Gothic 2 was okay but the add-on made it great again. Gothic 3 was mediocre but still fun. Gothic 4... uh, I mean Risen, was a little bit like a mix between Gothic 3 and Gothic 2 and I cannot say I am very happy about that. While it was still a good enough game I want to see something new and seeing as they are making Risen 2 it kind of makes me sad but it also makes me think that not all is lost yet and that they actually might do something else after it.
But if it's really true that they may be able to get the rights to Gothic back it would be disastrous. Nothing would keep them from making ANOTHER Gothic game and I'm kinda tired of them, I wonder why other people aren't.

I agree. Gothic 1 is definitely on the top of my list of all-time favorite rpgs. After Gothic 1, it went downhill from there.

On the other hand, Risen was a really good game as well. Piranha Bytes have proven to be one of the best rpg developers out there. I hope they get the rights back.

Damn lawyers. I mean what is so wrong simply stating what someone thinks of a situation? The guy simply states the contract was for a period of time. Lawyer jumps in, shhhhh, only we can speak. Love how we just give them power like that.

It will be a lot of work for them to get the series name back to its past shiny status, as they established a promising new series (Risen).

They were always getting it back, it was just putting up with the backstabbing and low quality of the expublisher.
