SOE Cuts Confirmed, The Agency Cancelled

Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed rumors of layoffs, as Bloomberg has word that SOE is closing its Denver, Seattle, and Tuscon studios, cutting 205 jobs, and cancelling development of The Agency, their planned PC and PS3 espionage-themed MMOG. They say SOE president John Smedley has said the company will develop more free-to-play and casual games. They also quote spokesperson Taina Rodriguez saying: "This strategic alignment of development resources better positions SOE to remain a global leader in online gaming and deliver on its promise of creating entertaining games for players of all ages."

Though I do hope it's free to play with, I wouldn't mind microtransactions either so long as they weren't items that gave a huge advantage to those that have it like some MMOGs. More Like Guild Wars. Maybe extra character slots, new paint jobs for your gear, gimicky things to change up gameplay for a character, etc.

Yeah... that's one of the reasons I avoided Planetside. Why pay a fee when there were plenty of shooters that had multi-player without a fee. Of course, that was when shooters let you have your own servers... and that's fading away due to the greed of the publishers.

Although you describe Planetside as being more tactical and different areas / scenarios to fight in... I still can't imagine it being all that different than a FPS that allows 32+ players on a map. (Except more people). Of course, since I never played it... I guess I wouldn't know.

The only reason I have any interest in Planetside Next, is because most modern day shooters are fairly consolized (Control-wise) ports... and I'm hoping Planetside Next will be a sanctuary from that.

Seems like a waste to cancel The Agency after almost four years of development. Sony is basically throwing millions of dollars down the drain. The game seemed relatively polished at E3 2010 so it was probably nearing completion too.

The Agency looked pretty cool but if I had to choose between Planetside: Next and The Agency, I'd 100% go with the Planetside sequel. I wouldn't doubt if we'll be seeing some The Agency assets transferred over to Planetside.

My next MMOG by all appearances looks to be Guild Wars 2, but I am looking forward to Planetside: Next. Planetside was an absolute blast once you got enough people on a server.

It wasn't just a frag fest, it was hundreds of people in three way wars between the factions. Each faction had different strengths and weaknesses and thus different tactics. When each was fighting over a single area of land with a central base and perhaps a few towers, that was when the game was at its best. So I'm absolutely looking forward to the game. Though I do hope it's free to play with, I wouldn't mind microtransactions either so long as they weren't items that gave a huge advantage to those that have it like some MMOGs. More Like Guild Wars. The original Planetside is still running after nearly 8 years! A lot of the regulars have returned to the game, presumably as a last hurrah before getting involved with the PS: Next Beta. You may wish to return for a month and reminisce on how it all began back in 2003

Drop onto Hossin near the Ixtab Amp Station; I'll be sure to leave a Marauder parked next to the BFR term for you.

Damn... The Agency was the only thing they were putting out that I had some interest in.

Well, that and Planetside... but for a shooter MMO... I think Espionage would be more interesting than just plain "war / frag-fests".

Oh well... guess I'll just focus on Guild Wars 2, now.

The single person who needs to be laid off is smedley, he has destroyed soe's once credibility. Well as much as a big corp can have credibility.
The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

The odd thing about this, from the second The Agency was announced, I had the feeling that it would end up getting canceled before ever seeing retail.

I doubt it would affect DCU:O, that title seems to be selling well, though I'm not sure what their retention numbers are after the first free month.

All in all I hope the new Planetside is good. The first game had so much potential, just had terrible team leadership (Dave Georgeson who's made a career of jumping from dev house to dev house after shipping titles, Mage Knight for namco, Planetside for SOE etc.)

The Agency was shaping up to be quite interesting - surely they can resurrect it as F2P, if that's the way they're going?

I think it was already announced as going Free to Play. Looks like they thought even that wouldn't allow it to make money.

The problem is DC Universe Online failed, which couldn't support the other projects going on.
