Crysis 2 DirectX 11 Speculation

German Website PC-Max has some speculation on plans to release a patch for Crysis 2 to enable DirectX 11 support. They round up a couple of forum posts on the topic and Twitter posts by Crytek's Tiago Sousa (which don't seem to address DirectX 11), and say one forum post says such a patch will be released today, though the source they cite, Crymod.com, is down at the moment, preventing us from verifying this. Thanks MajorD via Tech2/PCGames.de/Maximum PC.

That's primarily because there IS no reason to have DX11. It offers somewhat easier ways to implement everything we already can with DX9. DX11 is a marketing shove, to push suckers into adopting Vista (now Win7).

THAT IS ALL.

Go DirectX 9.0c and Windows XP SP3. Yes, I still use them because they work fine!

That is caused by this as well - but its even more noticeable when you just rotate around or move slightly (mostly if ya cloaked ;p) and concentrate on the edges of enemies and the stuff BEHIND them (best visible if theres say, concrete behind the enemies, you can sort of see a brightness variation "ghost" following them). And this isn't the SSAO implementation.

The AI will sometimes do something stupid like stare at a wall, or jump from cover *towards* you.. but for the most part it's pretty good.

When there's a lot (and there usually is) they can be annoyingly good at tracking you down while cloaked, and they put up a good fight.

I didn't like that they left in the HERE'S A GRENADE!!! -> <=> hud icon in on even the highest difficulty (original game removed it at Delta difficulty). I never once had a problem with a grenade getting me (game's not easy on high difficulty though).

Alien AI is definitely better than the first, though I wish they had some of the original aliens mixed with the new ones.

Despite minor annoyances I had a complete blast playing through this game over the weekend.

Whats the word on the enemy AI in this game? (cos to me that more important than the graphics)

When it works right it is pretty good... roughly the same as the original but a bit better at finding you when you're cloaked (especially the aliens). It's not the most realistic AI, but it does what it is suppose to do which is create a fun playground for messing with soldiers using suit powers.

There are glitches though, sometimes the AI seems to shut off briefly or gets hung up on something. It happened like 3 times total over 10 hours for me.

That, and considering how awesome the performance of this game is.. CryEngine 3 kicks the older one's ass. This game paints true beauty on the screen that runs smoothly on max settings on my year-and-a-half or so old system.

Yeah that too... I get 60fps locked on extreme settings, which is amazing for how good it looks. In contrast games like Borderlands, Bad Company 2 and Dragon Age 2 look much worse and run much worse.

Can't fault Crytek on Cryengine 3 at all from my perspective. I hope it takes off.

well tis true but it still ghosts (and THIS is why motion blur can't be disabled) And like so many things, once seen it can't be unseen. As someone doing render stuff i guess i am just more sensitive to fake AA.

that ghosting you talk about, is it when you view foreground objects against smoke or clouds in the background and you see like a halo effect on the edges? it is distracting to me and i dont work on 3d renderings.

Well, pop-ins aren't going to be a problem with a game where the largest areas are about 100x100 feet square (save one or two spots in the game, like Grand Central, but even that is a tiny little zone compared to the original.

But yes, graphics are still quite nice indeed, and I knew the graphics wouldn't be as good, considering this is a console game first and foremost.

It does run very nicely on my slightly out of date system on max settings. But each individual scene (even the real big ones) are roughly half as many polygons per scene as the original, 2 years ago.

Actually I think the graphics are worse in many ways on max settings that Crysis looked two years ago. The lighting system is about the only real improvement. Textures are weaker, models are lower poly, you name it. It is still gorgeous but in many ways a full on step backwards.

It has some improvements and some steps back. Pop-in is a lot better, lighting is a lot better and the not-palm trees look a lot better. Textures are weaker and models a little lower, as you said.

In the end I would tie them pretty much, both look great.

Two years ago and still used DX10 lol.

I keep trying to find the quote from them saying around the lines of ~Crysis 2 will never run on a console. I cannot find it but know it existed. Until somebody showed them probable sales numbers.

blurry fake AA that ghosts is amazing? Let me get those prescription glasses for you....

It's done so well here that yes, I would call it amazing. If this was the AA solution for every game I would be fine with it. It's not like STALKER or MLAA where you can really see the blur constantly and still see jaggies anyway. The blur in Crysis 2 is barely noticeable and the jaggies all but evaporated.

DirectX 11 has been available from MS since the release of Windows 7. It's also available for Vista. ATI had their DX11 cards out in Sept 09. You're about a year and 1/2 late.
He's right about it still not being part of the DirectX package from Microsoft though. It comes with 7, but on Vista you have to download an update package which just makes some vague reference to game graphics without any mention of DirectX.

ummm Crysis 2 should have been designed from the ground up to support DX 11. "enable DX 11 support" - WTF does that mean?? It's a DX 9 game so it runs on consoles....

How much longer do you think you can stick with your Windows XP?

Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

Keep feeding yourself lies and you'll continue to have a bright oblivious future with XP.
