Avalanche on Piracy, DRM, and Ports

Computer and Video Games has some thoughts on piracy and DRM from Christofer Sundberg, founder of Swedish developer Avalanche Studios. He admits piracy is as worrisome to them as it is to all other developers, but that 50% of his employees come from hacking background. He also once again explains his distain for DRM. "The DRM does not stop piracy," he said, "it just punishes the people who have actually paid for the game. It's completely useless. Forcing people to be online all the time and so on doesn't show respect to the people who actually buy PC games." To some degree he also blames PC piracy on bad PC games and console ports, saying: "I think piracy wouldn't be as much of an issue if there were better PC games out there. We could just scrap the whole concept of stupid DRM." Here's more:

I've always been of the opinion that we should design PC games for the PC players. PC players and console players are completely two different types of consumer. It's always unfair to not design the game for the consumer you're targeting. The PC version is always a second thought [for publishers], like: 'Oh, and we need a PC version too.'

You end up just doing a port, so there's not a lot of time, budget or creative thinking going into using the PC. I think that's quite sad. We [as an industry] should take the PC platform more seriously. Everyone is just complaining about piracy on the PC, but when it comes to in-game DLC or social connectivity, the options on PC compared to console are endless. I would like at some point to do a really good PC game designed specifically for PC players.

That's not really a question at all. Developers design for the lowest common denominator. In this case, that's consoles. Designing a game for PC and then trying to port it to consoles is difficult because they have completely different control schemes and hardware capabilities. X360 and PS3 are stuck with 512MB of RAM total (system and GPU combined). Trying to squeeze a PC game into that tiny amount is problematic, not to mention the 5-year-old videocards and CPUs that consoles use. Crytek could not port Crysis to consoles for that reason. Crysis 2 was designed for consoles and then ported to PC as a result. In addition, converting a PC interface into one that can be used with a gamepad takes a lot of work. Finally, PC and console audiences are different. PC gamers typically like deeper, more complex and challenging games while console gamers typically like more accessible and visceral games. If games were all designed for the PC, the console versions would have to be dumbed down. Some developers rebalance their console-to-PC ports but it's not very common, due to the PC having the smallest market.

For all the hate that console-to-PC ports receive, those ports generally end up a whole lot better than PC-to-console ports. The PC version is the best version about 99% of the time regardless of the lead platform.

Indeed. Look at the few games that start on PC and go to console... Dragon Age, Risen, Two Worlds, Venetica, Darkest of Days. All those games were reviewed poorly because reviewers all reviewed the console versions and the console versions were all buggy and ugly versions with bad UIs. It's much easier to start at the bottom and then add what you have time to add.

And as you say, 90% of the time a console port is still at its best on PC. Even if the mouse controls are completely screwed somehow you can still plug in a controller and have an identical experience to consoles gameplay wise and yet still get better graphics and better framerates, in addition to possible tweaks or mods. It's just not true the other way around, Dragon Age was a demonstrably worse game on Xbox compared to PC.
