i see your point but on the other hand, other launch day gadgets in the past that are highly sought after have not done this (certainly the Wii never had to discount at all for at least 2 years after launch). So the $$ off at launch seems like a precedent.

all signs I've seen so far indicate that 3ds will be a runaway success. The article seems to suggest that the price war is not because there's lack of consumer interest, but rather because there's too much. They're using it as an opportunity to draw customers into their stores.

Think of Angry Birds: it's free on every appstore (other than Apple's) because there's a lot of consumer interest for the game. Android marketplace, intel appup, etc are definitely benefiting from it because it's drawing people to their platform.

the 25 bucks off on _launch day_ of a new portable gaming system might well be unprecedented. Even more off in the UK.

Nintendo I guess is hedging their bets by allowing the discount, with the option to raise the price back if they want to -- but it smells of doubt.
