Out of the Blue

Today is National Medal of Honor Day. Word is: "Conceived in the State of Washington, this holiday should be one of our most revered. Unfortunately all too many Americans are not even aware of its existence." Thanks Joker961 for helping raise our awareness.

On a lighter note, today is also Tolkien Reading Day, celebrated on what is the (spoiler alert) downfall of Sauron. You're going to have to hurry to fit in the entire trilogy before tomorrow. Not sure if you're allowed to skip The Hobbit.

Honored Links: Thanks Ant and Mike Martinez and Acleacius.

Obviously the 3rd question on Ackbar's quiz is 'A women asks you if her clothing makes her look fat, what is your response?'

Yes?

Creston, I think you came up with a winner there. But I agree to many "days" out there. I don't even know why you need this one, vets already have two days, I'm sure this should be considered part of those.

Blue,

The proletariat at the BluesNews forums would hereby like to nominate March 25th as "Wipe Like You Mean It Day."

I think before Blue can bring your baby "Wipe like you mean it day" to the worlds attention it should first be clarified exactly what it is we are supposed to be wiping so vigorously, lets not forget the worlds lowest common denominator & the inevitable ingury & law suits.

I'm sure we could count on the turlet paper lobby to back this!

Aside from having a meal and swapping presents at Xmas I only really observe Remembrance Sunday. It's still very widely observed, and observed properly, with the only "commercialisation" being the Poppy Appeal, that is to make a donation to the Royal British Legion (who organise the day and support veterans) and wear their red poppy.

Although services are local in pretty much all towns and villages (a city is likely to have several) the main service is held at the Cenotaph and Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, easily my favourite monument/memorial/statue(s) (I tend to view them as two parts of a monument) partially due to it continuing to be properly observed and partly for it's profoundly poignant unveiling.

Possible, but a dude that looks like a lady is also 'a trap', in the internet vernacular.

When I read this, my first thought was "When's Call of Duty day?". (In my defense, the game is the only Medal of Honour in this country.) The ones that really bug me are things like "National Disability Awareness Day". So it's cool if I ignore the disabled the other 364 days then? That's handy.

What's the 3rd entry on that Admiral Akbar test? Maria von Trapp?

It could be drawn a lot better but the page shows several traps and the blank beside each reads "It's a (blank)!"

That's because every single day is now a fucking 'Day.' Talk Like Herbie Day, Spit Like An Eagle Day. Wipe Like You Mean It Day.

Get rid of all the retarded "Days", and maybe people would pay attention to the few that would actually mean something.

OR, you know, let's just go completely nuts and have Hours! Right now it's "Do No Fucking Work Hour" and it gets my vote.

Creston

And the holidays that are well-known have been watered down by blatant commercialism. It is sickening how Memorial Day has become something that is celebrated rather than observed and has become yet another "go out and buy stuff day". If Medal of Honor Day ever does become widely know, I'm sure someone will tell you that it is a good time to buy a mattress.
