Duke Nukem Forever Multiplayer Modes

Duke4.net has some scans of the Duke Nukem Forever preview from Official Xbox Magazine. The article in question outlines the multiplayer modes in the upcoming first-person shooter sequel, saying the game supports a maximum of eight players in four-versus-four teamplay games. They also outline four gameplay modes, which are a little, well, different, including a CTF-style game called "Capture the Babe," with a description that says: "when you grab the other teams [sic] babe sometimes she'll start to freak out as you take her back to your base, so you have to give her a gentle smack to quiet her down." They also outline weapons including the shrinker and the freeze ray and power-ups, including steroids and the Holoduke. They also describe an advancement system where you can spend rewards on customizing your Duke. Thanks Eurogamer.

8 players? Yeah, that's going to go over well in the PC world.

And the whole "Smack a babe to shut her up" thing is going to have all the media fucking HOWLING for blood. Which is probably exactly what Pitchford wants.

Duke DM with monsters on was the hardest level was a ton of fun.

I'd sit around some of the monster triggers and just wait for someone to be dumb enough to run near me. Then I'd trigger the beast and watch it slaughter them. This was best on Rabid Transit, where it was so easy to spawn the 1st episode boss to show up and just start eating people. Of course, it would then render an entire part of the level off-limits until he was dead, which often took quite some time as no one was interested in fighting him - more in running away screaming and praying not to get hit with a rocket.

I used to play Duke3D in multiplayer all the time as well, but only on co-op set to hardest. I think it only ever supported four players while running in co-op mode.

Duke 3D over the 14.4k modem was my first networked multiplayer game. Much fun.

This is the first time I've ever heard Duke mentioned in a multiplayer context,

Seriously, same here. It's kind of out of nowhere for me.

In any event singleplayer is what I care about and I am sure the game will be fun.

Unfortunately the Multiplayer is being developed by Piranha Games NOT Gearbox Software. It seems they've worked on a handful of EA games, but never as the lead developer and usually uncredited. They will be taking the lead on the upcoming Mechwarrior reboot though.

I have the magazine this article is from (which came out like two weeks ago) ... it included screens including one of a remade Duke Burger. (!)

It honestly looks pretty good. The only downside I saw was that there's a leveling system in MP, for aesthetic stuff to equip your Duke with.

(DOS + Lan Party Duke3D player here!)

Duke single player was fun but repetitive.
Duke multiplayer was absolute insanity full of intricate pipe bomb and tripmine setups that would blow half of a room up.

I've told plenty of stupid stories I have from playing Duke, both 1v1 via 14.4 modem and with 6-8 people over LAN. No single multiplayer game gives me the stories that one does, in part due to me playing actual friends and in part due to the sheer insanity of it. CS and Q2 are the only other games I can remember stories for. Maybe HL. Oddly not Goldeneye, considering I probably put more hours into that than Duke and Q2.

Duke had single player? Really? I honestly didn't know...haha. Which is funny considering the zillions of times we played it MP.

Played the shit out of Duke on PC but MP was a bit much for me to setup as a kid, I did play a lot of MP Duke on N64 though.

Great memories of Castle vs. Ship and lobbing pipe bombs back and forth. Also shrink rays in the stadium.

goes to show that reading about something and living through it are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things, doesnt it?

I doubt anyone is buying this for multiplayer.

WHAT?! They better come strong with the MP or they have disgraced the Duke name! I played the @#$@#$ out of this game back in the day. I think this game probably got more hours our of me with friends than any other fps shooter at the time. And I remember playing a ton of doom 2 via a modem. So much fun.

Yeah, I'm not much of a competitive multiplayer gamer - I'm more interested in the singleplayer side of things here. I was hoping there'd be some sort of co-op mode like the original, but it sounds like there won't be.

(And yeah, bodging out co-op sessions over dial-up back in the day was awesome - brings back memories...)

well, are they including Co-Op play? I loved that about the first one, A friend and I went through the entire campaign dailed up with our 28.8k modems back in the day.
