BioWare on Dragon Age II DRM

We haven't heard from EA on the story about reports of SecuROM DRM in Dragon Age II, but BioWare Live Team Technical Producer Derek "CrushBug" French made a couple of posts to our forums that discuss the matter. He says:

"Sorry, but there is some confusion on this. We use Sony Release Control which shares some functionality with other Sony products (SecuROM), but we do not use SecuROM for the DRM. Once the Sony Release Control check is passed, Release Control self-destructs, removing the Release Control wrapper and it is never used again. Game updates will not use Release Control because obviously the release date is passed. Additionally, installing the game and then any future game patch will also remove the Sony Release Control check and it will never run on your computer."

When asked about a running SecuROM process, he said: "There is no running process once it unwraps and self-destructs." In reply to a question about registry entries, he replies: "An inert registry entry that does nothing." Finally, when asked about files remaining on users' hard drives, he explains: "In a temp folder that is never referenced again. This part is sloppy and should be cleaned up, though. We will see about doing that in a patch."

So says the guy who linked to a posters myspace page, in an effort to embarrass him. Or did you already forget about that?

Despite these noted flaws by positive reviewers, they are giving the game high scores because it feels more 'Mass Effecty'.

Actually, they're giving it good scores because it's a good game in its own right even if it's not the same as the first Dragon Age.

Would I like it if it were more like the first game? Sure, I definitely would. Does that make the game bad because it's not?

No. It doesn't.

That simple, really, but people seem so hung up on what the first game was that they aren't even willing to look at this one as its own beast.

That's because Bioware pitched the original Dragon Age as the IP that's going back to old school cRPGs. Tough, tactical combat, a stupidly long game, and the classic 3rd person isometric viewpoint.

So going by Bioware's own original intent, DA2 is a failure out of the gate for not sticking with the old school RPG mechanic.

It was a fun game, but a big step backwards from Origins.

Oh, I agree with having different sorts of dialogue options, I just don't like the dialogue skills. Maybe if they could be done a little more organically: use your player's previous actions (Asshole much?: Intimidation gets better), appearance, etc.. There could still be a "Speech" attribute, but it wouldn't be used alone. Of course, this wouldn't really fit in with the Bioware 1D morality model.

Don't mind the removal of the dialogue-related talents: they always feel super weird in any RPG they're used in; I'd rather just be able to use whatever dialogue options I want, and it makes it bloody obvious which options will elicit the "desirable" response.

I totally mind the lack of persuasive talents. A good RPG should make diplomacy just as viable as combat and stealth. The problem with most RPGs is that they only have one speech skill, which makes it too easy to be diplomatic. Ideally, there would be multiple skills like Persuasion, Intimidation and Seduction, each with their own short and long-term repercussions. For example, you may seduce a character to get something, but then that character becomes obsessed with you and won't leave you alone. Conversely, intimidation could be used to get something, but then the character would dislike you and either refuse to deal with you again or even run away.

Yes, got a sad and pathetic life because I actually have quality standards and don't suck EA's dick and defend them on matters where it's apparent that they were quite guilty, the DRM and the forum ban.

Must be good defending a faceless corporation that doesn't give a shit about you. Keep on sucking its dick.

"SecuROM Sony Release Control" is still SecuROM, and after seeing first hand how inept those guys are, and how difficult it is to get their trash out of your hard drive once it's installed (and they're mighty proud of THAT, by the way), I'm not letting their shit into my computer ever again.

After seeing the reviews (the user reviews, not the paid reviews, mind you), I really don't care that much for Dragon Age 2. I do care for the fall of yet another big name due to a goddamned publisher trying to force consolized shit down everyone's throats.

Congrats on your performance in the worst publisher race, EA. Keep going like this and you'll catch Acti really soon.

To get back on topic (is there DRM in DA2?)

So, are "Reclaim Your Games" wrong on this or not?

I'd say they are and the fact that their website is still 'offline' make me wounder if they have been server with a take down notice, after all, if this is not true and is being put out on the internet and damaging 'EA/Bioware/DA2 sales/impressions of DA2' then I'd imagine who ever published it may have some question being asked of them.

On the other hand, how many of you think/know that it is true and that Bioware/EA and just big evil lairs?

The guy who owns the web site goes by Sblade on the Bioware boards. He says the site went down yesterday due to heavy traffic, but its still down. As Derek the Bioware rep said, it is just a release date checker, nothing more. I think the guy was just trying to bring some attention to his web site. It looks like he got what he was asking for.

I don't get this. DefaultName Hawke doesn't feel any more or less my own character than DefaultName Cousland did in Origins.

I guess my point is... the more you limit choices in an RPG, the less it can be considered an "RPG"... especially being the second in a series... which makes things seem like they are going backwards.

To drive the point, that's why I linked that "Super Press Space To Win Action RPG" as "Dragon Age 3".

I don't know if it's just a subtle psychological effect on account of his being voiced, or if it's because the dialogue options feel like they all lead to the same place in basically the same way (even if one is polite and one is aggressive), but I just get that feeling. It's annoying, but it's not killing the game for me.

He's right about the dialogue. Hawke is Shepard: not your own character. That's an annoying departure from DA:O's style.

I dunno, I kind of wish the magic system was more than just fireball. But I did like the limit breaks and the voice acting was pretty good.
