That's an old article about someone who used a trainer while signed into battle.net, not exactly the same situation. |

I can't believe that's even legal. I smell a lawsuit coming. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. It's like Honda not allowing me to drive my car because I ranted on their forums. If they won't let me post on their forum that's fine because it's theirs. The car however is mine and I can use whenever I please regardless of what they say. I hope all this really blows up in EAs face. |

Game companies want to continue to blur the line between online games and singleplayer ones though. "Games as a service" as Gabe says. This has some benefits for the consumer but it also means companies always have control over what you can play. |

The other thing I have with this is the same bullshit with Crysis 2.
Why do these damned games (online or not) all of a sudden require logins? This stupid crap is just really annoying and completely unnecessary.

| This isn't a EULA gotcha moment....this is unethical....ethics plays a part when your back is against a wall in agreeing to a EULA with whatever conditions a company wants to put in there else you cannot play a game. This could be some kid, a 12 year old who can't play his game because he spouted off (like kids do) on a forum. Online is one thing but single-player...that totally breaks common sense and ethics. |

While I understand this is a single player game, Blizzard does the same thing. You can get banned in game for a forum post. I'll also argue, like the game companies do, you don't actually "own" the game, you own a license to use it. You agreed to that when you took the shrink wrap off, just like it states on the box, or in the digital license agreement that you checked before your purchase went through. It's much easier to argue that WoW is a service than an actual game. While you can cut someone off from the service, arguing that a single player game is wholly service dependent is difficult. There are service aspects, but this seems out of scope.
And as mentioned, freedom of speech doesn't play here. |

And those are the reasons I started with "it's still terrible." Maybe but you didn't relate them at all and they were worth mentioning. If it was a simple as him just registering another account then I'd say well it's retarded but at least he has an alternative. A company being this petty would most likely see him doing so as evasion of their Terms and do it again. Indeed, I was just saying those are the reasons. And I doubt they would even know he is related to a new EA account, really. I think that would be pretty safe... I know some people who have a different Steam account for every single Steamworks game they own.
Again though, you are right there are real reasons he would not want to do that. Someone else was also right when they said he might have bought off the EA store, which means the purchase is already linked to his EA account. |

BTW, dosent freedom of speech play into all of this? Banning someone from speaking their minds can probably get you into a law suit.
No. EA is not a government entity. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Note the very first word. Congress shall make no law. Companies can make whatever rules they want. |

You agreed to that when you took the shrink wrap off, just like it states on the box, or in the digital license agreement that you checked before your purchase went through. It doesn't matter, companies can say whatever they want in their Terms of Service but it doesn't mean it's automatically legally binding even if the user agrees to it, otherwise they could get up to some serious shenanigans. In this particular case, most countries I can think of EA would be at least obligated to refund his money, although of course some places have different state/provincial laws as well.
Anyway this has already cost EA far more money than it was worth. I guarantee you that several employees are responding to the press about it instead of working on other things and it will most likely prevent more than $60 worth of people from buying the game. It is a pointless battle, the type of thing companies are normally above because they aren't financially viable and cost you expensive PR.
BTW, dosent freedom of speech play into all of this? Banning someone from speaking their minds can probably get you into a law suit. No and that's not what is important here either. The actual legality of this is fairly unimportant, the perception is what will ultimately cost EA money and its why they should apologize and change the silly policy.
