Bungie's MMOG Backtracking

The Bungie Weekly Update backtracks from lead network engineer David Aldridge's GDC comment earlier this week saying their next project is a massively multiplayer action game (thanks Big Download). They are now claiming this is a joke, invoking endless Charlie Sheen references in their explanation:

Tired of pretending that he’s not a -blam!-in’ rock star from Mars, David Aldridge inhaled a huge hit of David Aldridge at GDC yesterday. Subsequently, his face melted off and children wept over his exploded body. After the childish tears, gelatinous gibs, and acrid smoke cleared, an industrious journalist noticed the final slide from David’s GDC deck which apparently proclaimed that we were hiring for a "massively…multiplayer action game." Ruh oh.

Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors. Unfortunately, most people can’t figure David out – they can’t process him. And we don’t expect them to. You can’t process David Aldridge with a normal brain. You’d need tiger blood and Adonis DNA.

Why is/was that intended to be funny if it was a joke what's the punchline. A game developer developing a new game, who cares if it's a mmog or single player, what's the joke.

The joke was that there were tons of rumors going around that Bungie was working on this. They claim they were making fun of the rumors.

I haven't heard the original audio or anything, but considering that everybody and their grandmother is making an MMOG, and that statistically speaking it's a bad idea to make one as the market is overcrowded and most fail, I'm guessing Aldridge responded to a question about the next game with a sarcastic "we're making an MMOG of course". If that's how it was, it's worth a chuckle since the MMOG-making craze is indeed worthy of ridicule IMHO.

Is the joke that Bungie is too unskilled to make a mmog..So they were teasing since they would screw it up..They were trying to get a big yuk, yuk.
Haha..scared ya!..type of thing?

Now on the other hand this Bungie Weekly Update is hilarious. They are trying to explain a joke that doesn't exist. Not only are they trying, they are trying so hard it's making themselves look...what's the word.. like a joke?

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Come on, Bungie. You can't expect us to believe there's that much of an internal disconnect in the company for something like this to happen. It would seem he just jumped the gun. I fully expect you to reverse this reversal in several months time and tell us that you just weren't ready to announce it at the time.

James Woods: Oh that's fun. That sounds like you had a fun time. Where would I fit in with the fun time, huh? Where does James Woods fit into the fun?
