Call of Duty: Black Ops Double XP Weekend

Activision announces a double XP weekend for Call of Duty: Black Ops will commence on all platforms about 30 minutes from now, at 1:00 pm EST:

Black Ops's second Double XP Weekend hits all platforms this weekend. Get double the reward for your efforts, and watch that rank fly. Participate in the glorious mayhem starting approximately at 10am Friday PST and continuing through 8am Monday PST.

Or, play like you normally do but earn twice the experience for it.

Problem?

There is an inherent problem with having unlockable items, gear and perks in a competitive multiplayer shooter. This problem should be fairly obvious. The higher-ranked players are those who have the most skill and have been playing for the longest amount of time. With unlockables, they have an additional advantage over newer players. Similarly, if you take two equally skilled players and have one create a new account while another uses a fully-ranked one, the player with the fully-ranked one has a distinct advantage, even though both players are equally skilled. That is a problem.

It's really sad how developers rely so heavily on operant conditioning these days. It is not good design but I guess it does appeal to the lowest common denominator of gamers. Namely, those who will only play games so they can see their numbers get higher and be "rewarded" with items and/or features that should have been available from the very start. I hope that this trend dies some day but given the industry's trajectory towards casual players, I don't think it will die anytime soon.

And before someone inevitably draws a comparison to RPGs, no, they're not comparable. In an RPG, leveling exists so that the player can experiment with different roles before specializing. That's why it's so much easier to level early on and much harder later. If a player had to choose all their final stats at the very start of the game, many players would likely find themselves forced to stick with roles they don't enjoy. The presence of leveling in multiplayer shooters has nothing to do with allowing flexible role-playing and everything to do with giving players an incentive to continue playing an otherwise shallow experience.

Stop your CRYING you baby. We don't need to hear your WHINING...
