Serious Sam 3 sounds like it's going to be pretty fun. I hope there's no more miscommunication between the developers and the community, like the ones that resulted in Serious Sam 2.
Lost my old Duke 3D discs sometime ago, but still have Shadow Warrior. When Duke Forever was canceled, I had stopped caring about that game about a month earlier. But recently, playing Shadow Warrior again, I remembered everything good about 3D Realms' games. All that interactivity, the little details, just being free to explore the environment, not to mention memories from multi-player (as Beamer said, often 1-on-1), tricking friends with the Holo Duke, and such. It's enough to fill me with hope that Duke Nukem Forever can retain the charm of Duke 3D. It doesn't sound like there's going to be an inventory anymore, which means a lot of those fun tools may be gone. Supposedly replaced with things like a beer button (apparently, Duke is now a one beer queer). The other thing I hope makes an appearance are editing tools, or at least some kind of level editor. Making maps for Duke and sharing them with the community was simple and fun. |

I think they look hilarious, but in a good way. They look like they're untooned versions of the older games. Wacky looking and chaotic. Sounds like Serious Sam to me. Agreed, but they need to commit to it.
I totally agree with the pro-Duke comments as well. The interactivity was awesome, the weapons were great, the secret areas were a blast to find, and multiplayer was something magical. For one, I loved single player maps in multiplayer, especially with enemies (remember, this was when multiplayer was more often than not 1 on 1 via modem, though we did play at school sometimes.) I remember finding the first secret room in level one and freaking my buddy out by watching him through the cameras. He eventually learned how to get there so I found the secret apartment across the way and we'd play Beirut, taking turns shelling each other until an RPG finally hit home. Then there were all the times I'd lay out intricate trip mine setups with pipebombs spread out to make sure that a chain reaction killed everything, or putting trip mines in narrow shafts (yeah, I had a reputation for being a cheap trap-making jerk.) Or, though it sounds awful now, the times that we'd just circle each other point blank unloading our pistols too quickly to kill and end up in a kicking fight. So much fun.
That last part is how I finally discovered my esdf keyboard scheme. I got tired of not being accurate in those weapon-onloading-and-circling fights. At the time I used a trackball with lmb=shoot, rmb=forward and mmb=180 degree turn. I quickly put reverse where 180 was. I then started pushing the keyboard all the way left to use the arrow keys with the sides for strafing, up for jump and down for duck. This suddenly made those circle fights easy because I could strafe everyone, but weapon changing and door opening was a bitch, so I decided esdf was close to arrow keys, left plenty of buttons nearby for other features (which I still think wasd fails at) and was the way to go. It wasn't for a while, though, maybe not till quake, that I finally put forward/back there instead of on the mouse buttons.
A, the wild west of FPS gaming. |

Looking more forward to this than DNF. Me too. All Duke ever had was pixilated porn and that wasn't all that hot.
Serious Sam continues to deliver fun while 3DRealms wasted years and years on DNF which will most likely suck if the videos are any indication.

It was also of considerable renown among game designers - and level designers in particular - because its environments were so incredibly interactive by 1996 standards. Walls you could blow up with rockets? A building you could *detonate*? Scripted events? It was all pretty heady stuff, once upon a time. Hell, Duke's interactivity is impressive even to this day. When was the last time you saw a game that let you splatter an enemy's brains on a wall, then watch them slowly slide down? Or step in a pool of blood and then leave bloody footprints behind you? Or crush someone with an elevator, then watch their intestines stretch out as the elevator rises? Or use a urinal, destroy it and drink from the resulting fountain of water? Interactivity in most modern shooters consists of simple physics objects flying around when you shoot them. |

Duke was vulgar, crass, and crude, but it has a worthy legacy because it really was a tightly designed, envelope-pushing shooter. Walls you could blow up with rockets? A building you could *detonate*? Scripted events? It was all pretty heady stuff, once upon a time.
And Serious Sam 3 looks great. If id has any cojones left, they'll take notes - the fat rocket-launching thing's basically what Doom 3's mancubus should have been. |

Oh, man... Serious difficulty level, drink if you die, a shot if it's from friendly fire, and finish your beer if it's by a headless suicide bomber.
Those might be the best LAN nights of my life. They were certainly the shortest. |

Where do I pre-order? Yeah, I double take'd that one too...they must be planning to render a TON of baddies on screen at once... This has been something that you've been able to do in Serious Sam games, at least I KNOW it was a feature in the first one, because we co-op'd the campaign with like 10 people. It was pretty awesome.
Croteam knows how to do a ludicrous shooter right. |

This series owes more to the more frantic levels in Doom than anything in D3D. Though on that account they turned the dial up to 11 for enemy count. |

Hopefully the levels will be fairly open arenas. That was one of the appeals for me of the originals.
Splitscreen would be great too but I'm not really expecting that. |

Graphics looks like a strange, silly juxtaposition, but it will ultimately come down to the gameplay.
They made a lot of bad tweaks with SS2 and I hope the feel and gameplay are more in line with the first games. I hated, hated, hated, hated those football players. Having enjoyed the HD rereleases; not interested in playing SS2 again, Ray |
