Out of the Blue

The never ending war with the squirrels continues (naturally, since it is never ending). This morning I found that not only had they once again dislodged one of my suet baskets from where it hung in a tree, but they actually broke the lid off in order to get at the fatty goodness inside. There's a recently opened store nearby that sells bird feeding supplies, and I'm going to see what they have in the way of squirrel-proof suet feeders.

I need to find my old tag line...but I think I am up to about 40+ squirrels in my back yard....dead of course.

I have the majority of them, but the dogs are catching up.

BB guns are awesome. Just hope I don't shoot my eye out....

I gotta say though, I see a lot less now that some girl bought the house next door and doesn't feed the birds/squirrels....

I solved my squirrel problems by getting a squirrel feeder. I get extra peanuts in-the-shell to add to the "critter crunch". The squirrels take the large peanuts and bury them. They spend up to 15 minutes per peanut which means they will have less time to harrass the birds...I also found that the scratching they do helps aerate the soil and the grass grows bushier. Plus, the seeds they drop onto the ground draws J's and Doves.

So, along with the squirrels, J's, and Doves, my thistle socks and sugar dispensers draw a full range of finches and hummingbirds. And, the peanuts draw magpies during the summer. I get so many birds and such a variety in my yard that a hawk will occasionally fly over to see what's for lunch and once a month or so there's evidence of a frag.
