Personally I found penumbra scarier because I could reate to the character and the setting more. An 18th century transylvanian castle and a nobleman is just kinda out there, whereas greenland and a doctor of physics strikes close to home.

I collect these boxed games too. Digital distribution sucks for us collectors.

With that said, I am a bit confused as to this report - I just received my boxed copy of Amnesia yesterday.. ordered from Amazon.

I'm guessing it won't be in stores until the 22nd but amazon got it ahead of time or something. Got my copy today... glad to see it is DRM-free (there is an offline serial like the old days) but it's a shame there is no booklet.

Oh well.

I loved this game, it was definitely my favourite release from 2010.

I actually feel guilty for paying next to nothing for it in the Steam winter sale, I even got more of a discount for owning the (also superb) Penumbra series.

My only criticism is the weakness of some of the possible endings to the game, I did three of the four and only one really felt satisfying.

It's nice to see that they released the level editor too so I'm looking forward to playing some content from the community when I can put my shredded nerves back together after finishing it.

I bring this on myself though. I only play at night with headphones on and the lights off.

A typical session involves me playing it for 30 seconds to 2 minutes and turning it back off again.
I'm exactly the same. Sad isn't it? x)

If you want to buy this game, please buy it directly from Frictional. If you buy the retail version, THQ takes a hefty cut and the developers make less money.

I second this sentiment.

Or just steal it like JeryKKK does!

Sorry, I collect boxed PC games. If you don't care about getting a box though I certainly agree with the sentiment.

BTW, there are three monsters, one of which is invisible.

" literally only three enemies "

^-- comon man did you even read what I wrote?

Still think a bigger monster would've made it perfect.

I don't think the appearance of the monsters really matters. The only thing that matters is that they can kill you quickly and you cannot kill them.

BTW, there are three monsters, one of which is invisible.

In any case, the biggest problem with Amnesia is that the enemy encounters are so heavily scripted. They only appear when specifically triggered and then they magically disappear after you've remained hidden for a sufficient amount of time. Penumbra was a scarier game because most of the enemies were just roaming around and they didn't vanish just because they couldn't find you.

It's about on par with some of the good moments of Thief. Maybe not up to par with some of the most terror inducing parts of the Thief series but i really appreciated Amnesia, it's the next best thing, and there is nothing else close to it these days.

Fatal Frame scared me way more, and the fact that there are literally only three enemies in that game bothered me.. ONE of which you never physically see.

Still a great title, but after you see the two possible "monsters" ( which happen to look like splicers ) it burned out a bit for me.

On a side note... wow, that box art really is atrocious. I hope THQ isn't taking too big of a cut because it looks like it cost them $1 to do that box art. They should have just used the art that they used for the game's icon.

An above average set of headphones does wonders for this one.

I just can't get immersed enough in this game to feel scared. I tried playing late at night with all the lights out, but no luck.

Maybe I should find an abandoned warehouse and play there on a laptop around midnight.

You guys struck my curiosity, so I watched a couple game trailers on YouTube and there seems to be some Thief1-esque to it. Is that a true statement?

It looks to be a decent game. The ambient sounds and music are creepy by themselves; I can only imagine what the rest of the game holds.......

This game is the best horror game ever made!

Sweet. Now I can get good version.

Guess I won't bother finishing Pneumbra Overture or is not finishing it a mistake?

Other than being the same original engine and by the same developers the games aren't related.

But I do recommend you finish Penumbra Overture because it's a great game as well. Also I haven't tried playing it after Amnesia yet, it may feel a lot less polished in comparison.
