Interesting new development:
http://dubiousquality.blogspot.com/2011/02/crysis-2.html
In case you missed it, here's what happened last week (thanks, RPS): ...a developer build of Crysis 2 containing the full game, multiplayer and the master key for the online authentication has been leaked, and is currently freely available from all sorts of astonishingly illegal websites.
That, in itself, is not something I would normally write about. However, I received an e-mail from a source who wishes to remain anonymous (for obvious reasons), and here's what they said: They have no internal security. Just about any employee could have leaked that build, and they (the Yerlis) aren't exactly diplomatic about firing people. They should feel lucky that the source didn't leak, as that would be only a little bit more difficult to get out of the building.
That's certainly more interesting.
The source is someone who has e-mailed for years, and I have no reason to doubt their sincerity. |

This was an intentional leak, no doubt about it. To be clear, there's a difference between "intentional leak" in that it wasn't accidental, and "intentional leak" in that specific higher-ups at EA and/or Crytek leaked the game in an attempt to drum up publicity. The former is almost certain, the latter is almost certainly not the case. |

No third party has access to all master keys, and certainly no marketing ploy would leak said master keys. 100% sure it was an inside job, the story behind it however is one I would love to hear. An employee that was fired, or knew he was going to be fired soon? Someone with an axe to grind? Someone deliberately sabotaging Crytek?
All I know is that I truly wish for the truth to come out to the public since I have a feeling if it did it would likely expose some of the bad rotten qualities that infests the gaming industry. |

Your use of "corporate suits" also makes you sound dimwitted. Also makes it sound like you've never been inside a corporation, much less a video game company. And you've definitely never had a position of any impact, a "suit" as you call it. So he is dim-witted because he's never had the job of a "suit" or doesn't know the ins and outs of corporations? There's plenty of truth behind the conceptions of "suits" in corporations. Or, as I like to say, astoundingly ignorant, spineless yes-men. You sound like you're projecting the fact that you have worked at good corporations that this must mean they are all altruistic, humanitarian entities with good decision-making processes. Even good corporations have typical "suits"' at them. You need to come work where I do. I GUARANTEE your view will be altered in short order.
Other than a disgruntled employee, just tell me why this would be an intentional leak. Isn't that EXACTLY what he said his theory was? |

Well yes, they want to fuck me out of my money. I You realize the term "fuck you" makes you sound dimwitted, right?
The sole reason corporations exist is to make money for their shareholders. This doesn't necessarily mean "fuck you," and most that try to "fuck you" end up out of business.
My thinking was that this was an intentional leak, but that it was done by one or more of the devs, NOT the corporate suits in charge Your use of "corporate suits" also makes you sound dimwitted. Also makes it sound like you've never been inside a corporation, much less a video game company. And you've definitely never had a position of any impact, a "suit" as you call it.
Other than a disgruntled employee, just tell me why this would be an intentional leak. Some here are claiming it's a marketing thing. These people are idiots. I'm just going to throw some things out to you guys:
1) Marketing at EA is more or less the top of the video game marketing game. 2) One of the next steps in the marketing ladder is producer. So a "suit" would be able to jump to actually having creative input if he does his job well. 3) It's a small industry with a short memory. Getting fired for fucking up at one company is usually enough to stop you from getting rehired at another. 4) Yes, Crysis 2 is getting free publicity from this. a - does it need it? b - will this publicity be greater than lost sales? c - assuming you were in marketing, would you be so certain of a and b that you'd risk everything in 1, 2 and 3?
I find it mind-boggling that some of you, and maybe not many but some, are claiming this is a marketing decision.

That's what everyone knows since the age of free radios.. The point is that it seems silly to say that EA can't read someones mind on one hand while doing it yourself on the other. People pirate games for many reasons, you can't speak for them any more than I can. Thankfully we don't have a vested financial interest in the outcome whereas EA does. It doesn't excuse their public relations nonsense anymore than it excuses people claiming that all pirates have perfect moral compasses.
Anyways it's a shame that this happened regardless of how I feel about Crytek, it doesn't set a good public precedent for the PC community and I feel sorry for short sighted people saying "good they deserve it!" and whatnot. |

Maybe that was a bad choice of words Verno, I cant remember the last time a game sold on its own "merit", lately most AAA titles turn out to be shit in a gold wrapper and still they sell like hotcakes |
