64-Player Battlefield 3 This Fall

The Battlefield Blog has some of the promised new details on Battlefield 3, saying the next installment in DICE's military shooter series is due for release this fall for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The update calls this the "true successor to Battlefield 2," saying it will have full single-player and co-op campaigns as well as 64-player (on the PC) multiplayer, as well as the return of jets and (wait for it) prone. They also offer a teaser trailer, and promise more details throughout this month in magazine coverage, starting with the new issue of Game Informer, where they have word on the game's use of DICE's new game engine: "it wasn't until the company developed the powerful new Frostbite 2 engine that it felt all the pieces were in place to create a proper follow-up. Armed with powerful upgrades like deferred rendering, real-time radiosity, a new animation system borrowed from the EA Sports label, and an exponential leap in destructibility, executive producer Patrick Bach dubs Frostbite 2 'the best piece of technology on the market when it comes to building games'." In a bold move, the Battlefield 3 Website offers preorders of the limited edition without yet revealing what it includes.

Don't care much about single-player but if we can play some co-op this time then that could be fun.

I think they've hit all the main issues with this announcement, just need to see it in action with all the destruction etc.

Regardless if it ends up being tamed down for consoles it's still an instant purchase, I'll wait for the beta and see how it performs before jumping on the hardware upgrade bandwagon - hopefully by then Intel will have their shit sorted out.

This looks promising, but they need to add an overheat/cooldown on the LMG's with the addition of prone. LMG's are already ridiculously overpowered in BFBC2, this just makes it worse.

It's "possible," but my experience is that things will still go quite wonky. You'll have to spend so much time trying to rip out all of the old drivers that are screwing with your framerates or causing BSODs or whatever that you'll save time by reinstalling.

I don't see how that's possible, Windows 7 will not load device drivers for devices that aren't present. You need to simply run an uninstaller on any bundled software to remove it - CCC or Nvidia Driver Panel. I've done this at work on a couple dozen systems with nary a bad result, Windows 7 is quite good this way. At worst you might need to re-install something with linked libraries like PhysX but most games will do that automatically at setup or run time.

Windows 7 even runs multiple videocards from different manufacturers for anyone wanting to do that silly dedicated PhysX card nonsense.

I will admit, I am pleasantly surprised at these news, I was expecting DICE to shit again on PC gamers but these first news are good, very good.

Fixed that for you.

And let's wait for the actual game, mmmkay?. Bad Company 2 was going to come with true dedi servers, mapping, modding and many other things. And let's not (ever) forget about BF1943 and BC2's Onslaught.

DICE just loves to break promises. Not with my money.

Oh I know this all too well. My money is still on Heroes of Stalingrad. And for BF3, though the news are good, I'll believe it when I see it, that is, 64 players in action, modtools, server files, the works.

If DICE holds true to 'everything' that made BF2 great, and more, with the new Frostbite2 engine, it should be a pretty awesome game that will spark my BF addiction all over again with numerous hours wasted sitting at my PC playing. Computer

Time will tell.......

Well, I guess it's time to start putting together a Windows 7 machine.

Even with some of the grimacing quirks Windows 7 has, it still puts the nail in the coffin for XP. Your harddrives will thank you.

I'm still waiting for the bottomless box of ammunition myself. Range warden says "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."

Let me know if you need a hand grandpa

I kid, I kid. One of the nice things about Windows 7 is that you can gracefully motherboard swap by the way, even between different manufacturers. I upgraded my motherboard, CPU and SSD on the weekend, took about 10 minutes from hardware install to windows login.

I did not know this was possible in Windows7, nice!

And just imagine if they added the Lean function too. Now that would be something!

I'm sure they won't forget joystick support... they can't be that air-headed.

I played my first online match of BF2 literally yesterday. I was a hardcore addict of BF1942, but for various reasons never got into the second one.

I'm definitely on board this time.

Prone? Bleh, I'm one of the few who despised that dolphin diving BS. Oh well.

Cutting out prone to cure dolphin diving is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Bunny hopping and dolphin diving are the result of a shoddy design...not of having freedom of movement. A good design would make your accuracy go totally wonky if you tried that crap...take a gun out to the range and try dolphin diving and bunny hopping, and a few things are guaranteed to happen:

1. You will totally miss anything you try to hit, no matter how many cases of ammo you burn through.

2. Your rounds will, therefore, hit things you did not intend to shoot...dirt, other targets, birds, more dirt, your friends, the sky, and likely yourself.

3. You will get thrown off the range by the range master. He may or may not beat you savagely about your head, neck, and shoulders with your own weapon before, during, and/or following said ejection.

Blaming prone for dolphin diving is like blaming the ability to name your avatar for the red tag bug.
