PC BF1943 and BC2 Onslaught Cancelled

The Electronic Arts UK Forums have the announcement that the other shoe has dropped on the PC edition of Battlefield 1943 as Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager of DICE, finally admits it has been cancelled (thanks Gamer's Hell). This comes two weeks after a profile for the game showed up in some new NVIDIA reference drivers, four months after a foul up suggested the PC edition had been released, six months after EA started refunding preorders, ten months after the game was promised "soon", and 18 months after the game's release on Xbox 360. Karl also announces that the doubts about the release of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Onslaught for the PC were justified, as any plans for that are now cancelled as well. Word is:
This is one of those cross roads where I need to make a hard decision. While we’ll continue supporting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and previous games, it’s time to look ahead to the next giant leap for DICE – the release of Battlefield 3, powered by the mighty Frostbite 2 engine. Our goal is crystal clear: we’re going to build the best Battlefield game ever, and we’ll do whatever it takes to make this the biggest launch in DICE’s history.

We know some of you eagerly have been awaiting Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Onslaught on PC. I’m sad to say that these two titles are now officially cancelled. Instead, our talented teams will focus on delivering the greatest possible gaming experience in our next behemoth release. We’re confident this will lead to an even better experience in Battlefield 3, not only on PC, but on all platforms.

For an idea of what that means, watch this space for some exciting news I think you’ll like.

If you say so, I don't often get on here and be a total debbie downer are random times without much evidence. Bad Company 2 was a big PC hit but Creston acts like DICE shit in his cereal.

Don't take it personally, I don't want to ignore you because I like your comments most of the time. Every once in a while though you just come off like you're pissed because the devs didn't offer you a blowjob and transport you back to 1998 so they could make a PC exclusive.

Which is funny, because Bad Company 2 launched on PC and consoles at the same time, too, and yet it was actually pretty goddamn fun for quite a while. Opinions do differ on whether it was good, but it does have a pretty solid following on PC and it has sold pretty successfully, too.

None of this is a guarantee that BF3 will be good, and DICE's haphazard sense of quality control and their wildly inconsistent patching has been a problem ever since the very beginning, but I've gotten used to that and it hasn't really hurt them that bad on PC so far.

But hey, if the Blues News Hive Mind Temper Tantrum says that BF3 will be "consolified" by ignoring the facts and making up shit, then that's how it will be. Right?

At least they could do a wake island map in BF3.

God I hope not, and that goes double for Strike at Karkand. Let's hope they create NEW maps that are fun to play on.

Cancelled? I don't think they ever intended to release them....

And BF3 on all platforms means it will suck.

They will say "oh special effort for PC..." then it will get here and it will be the same exact thing. Menu system will suck, controls will suck, FOV will suck, etc etc etc.

I have zero faith in them.

Yup. My main problem with DICE and EA and the BF series is that EVERY single time they release something the EXACT SAME ISSUES from the prior game are in the new game. WTF, you already fixed this in the last game, why did you release with them in the new game? Server browser sucks at release. CTD when map changes at release. Autobalance not working. On and on.

Don't get me wrong, I loved BF2 and BC2, but they took their sweet time after release fixing basic issues that made the game hell to play until they were fixed. (Don't get me started on BFV, which they broke even worse with a patch and never fixed...)

BC2:Vietnam is my game of choice for shooting people online no doubt.

If BF3 is as good as BC2 they'll have succeeded in my opinion.

My only problems with BC2 are UI and workflow related, the gameplay is extremely solid and fun.
Removal of prone ended up being a good idea.

I played the 360 version. I couldn't enjoy the game without the ships.

What's with all the entitled whinging?

It was barely a remake, it was a consoling. Which was terrific fun on the console (at least until BC2 surpassed it), but do we really need it on the PC? I for one wouldn't have bought it.

I'm loving the Vietnam addon for the record. That's why I wanted Onslaught too, it looked like a lot of fun When it comes to Dice I'm only jaded about EA's involvement, Dice themselves have been pretty good to the PC.

You can all be Jaded all you want.

But I've gotten well more than my moneys worth out of Bad Company 2. If you didn't like it, that is your deal. In my opinion it was a solid release and one of the best PC games I've played in years. It's easily the game I've logged the most hours in on Steam.

Onslaught would have been a waste on the PC due to server size, and 1943 would have been just as much of a waste for a few piddly maps.

I'd much rather their focus be where it is, on Battlefield 3.

Stop being such whiny bitches on here.

Over the past few weeks I've seen devs get raked over the coals here over the lack of PC demos. But a dev outright cancels a game and we see "Welp, that's a shame." Too funny.

People wrote these off a long time ago anyway. It's not like every case of these things happening is the same and can be treated with a blanket attitude like "oh ok guys we thought this about X, it must apply to everything!!!!".

It's probably because they've been in limbo so long, and BF3 probably isn't that far away http://twitter.com/locust9/status/33204033913102336 that a lot of people probably gave up on them already.

I saw that earlier, probably a big reveal or something tomorrow, I saw other EA tweets mentioning tomorrow being a big day.
The BF3 demo is up and running and it's been shown inside EA to different sources for a few weeks now. Hoping to see it in action soon.
