Square Enix Financials

Computer and Video Games has word that third quarter profits at Square Enix are down 76.6% and sales are down 27.5% over the same period last year (thanks Joao). Further, GamesIndustry.biz (registration required) notes that the Japanese publisher/developer's full year profits are projected to be down 89% over the prior year. This is attributed to "intensifying competition in the console game market," by Yoichi Wada, Square-Enix president, who looks forward saying: "the company has implemented organisational changes in the third quarter while also working to better select and further strengthen our most competitive titles." The downturn comes in spite of word that Kane & Lynch 2 and Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 sold over one million copies each during the quarter.

Yes, after the disaster of FF XIV, Square Enix is the laughingstock in Japanese community as well.

However, there are still large number of die-hard fan base who buys anything labeled "Final Fantasy" and "Dragon Quest" so I don't think this company goes down even if they release 10 more crappy games.

They'll survive as long as the Fantasy is never Final and there are always Dragon's to Quest for. SquareEnix's demise will not come from anything North American based/created, and more importantly any game where the North American audience is the target market. The worst case scenario that will come from this is a bad quarter and Eidos getting sold off if DX3 bombs. That's it.

If they were ever in massive trouble, all they'd have to do is simply announce a FFVII remake and their stock would rebound like no one's ever seen before. When the game actually hit, lol.

SquareEnix isn't going anywhere.

I think the massive failure of FFXIV might have something to do with it. I found this a bit humorous. It would seem the Japanese hate horrible games as well. And here I thought it was just our inferior unrefined gaming tastes that made it such a failure in the US.

Intensifying competition?

Is that the new term for when your companies production values take a sharp decline while everyone else stays the same or improves?

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history.....and they are stupid. Dwight D. Eisenhower

I don't know about the rest of you, but I felt that the implementation of firearms in Kane and Lynch 2 was horrible.

It was so cheap. It was like a budget-bin game. It was so boring and lame.

I think the reason your profits are down is because you released two SHITE Final Fantasy titles in a row, Square Enix.

But sure, stick your head in the sand and pretend it's because of "intensifying competition in the console game market."

Because, you know, suddenly in 2010 everyone was like "Shit, Square Enix is eating our lunch! We need to make titles to compete with them!" Rolleyes

I'm sure they lost a lot of revenue to the failure that is FFXIV.

Hmm...once DX:HR is released "early 2011" I'm sure they will be liquid again.

On the other hand...they should dump the console biz and focus on PC games. I think if one developer focused on PC games we would have some awesome games again...like we started to get in the late 1990's with titles like Thief, Unreal, System Shock, Dues Ex, Tribes, Clive Barker's Undying, and Half-Life just to name a few. There hasn't been much of an advancement in PC gaming since then other than in the multiplayer arena.

PC games were headed toward innovative and interesting weapons until developers started to focus on consoles. Since then the weapons have headed toward simple and easy to use weapons...point and click...and for some games like Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light it's just click because the weapon auto targets the enemies you are facing.

PC games are getting boring...it's just more of the same stuff we had before...and for Duke Nukem Forever it is exactly what we had before.
