Champions Online: Free For All Launch, Q&A

Champions Online: Free For All is now live, offering the chance to practice your heroism in Cryptic's superhero MMORPG without having to find a place to hide your wallet in your tights. These Release Notes outline what's changed in the game, explaining the difference between silver and gold, and explaining their newly introduced archetypes system. The notes also include an address from Executive Producer Shannon Posniewski, who is also the subject of a Champions Online: Free for All Launch Day Q&A on Ten Ton Hammer.

Champions Online F2P is worthy checking out if you haven't played it, just for the character generator alone. I spent 2 nights making characters, and only an hour playing.

DCUO is literally killing my wrist. Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click Click click click click click click click, it's like Diablo on crack. I'm going to go buy a gamepad before I get carpel tunnel.

@Fion

I believe you mean Jack Emmert. He did indeed want nothing more than to show up CoH. And his attempt to do so backfired quite nicely.

This is why DCUO is doing better than Champions at launch, even though it's a relatively shallow game. The simple fact is that they just concentrated on making a fun game, period.

CoH, on the other hand is currently seeing more consistently populated servers than it has in a long time and has been that way for months with not much slowdown.

, I always felt the game started out terribly with that little startup training area. Just drops you right into a battle ground and gives you these really lame missions. Go kill 5 balloons over there, go talk to that guy. It technically works but it just seems like a bad way to introduce someone to the game.

And that is why during beta once the NDA dropped I told folks (especially CoH players and fans) that some of the developers (including the lead guy on CoH when it first hit) seemed to want to 'one up' CoH with CO. They included stuff that CoH players had wanted for a long time. More travel powers, more open power selection, customizable powers, etc. But in doing so they forgot the heart of CoH and what made that game so special for its time. They ended up with a game with boring gameplay and bland powers and just poor design. Of course before long CoH introduced the stuff players had wanted for some time and each system was far better than CO's version.

Of course at the time some folks called me an idiot, blasting me for my opinion or telling me I didn't know what I was talking about. Those same people left the game within weeks once it hit. Sure CoH is out dated and was not without its flaws. But it was far superior to CO, and even being 'free' couldn't drag me back to the game.

As a former paying player, it didn't do anything for me, I'm sorry to say.

At first I fired it up and had a lot of problems converting my characters from gold to silver (that is, paying account to non-paying). Non-paying accounts are allowed only two character slots, so if you happened to have more than two, as I did, you're going to start with a lot of deleting.

Free characters also have to choose from 8 or so archetypes, where almost all of your abilities are chosen for you. Unfortunately, one of my mains was all about electricity, and there's no archetype for that one, so he was gone.

My main however was a level 23ish munitions guy whose main two abilities were the assault rifle and the minigun. Unfortunately the 'soldier' archetype does not include the minigun ability, and none of the archetypes can borrow from the abilities in other power types, so it felt like a right old nerfing.

As it happens, I never ended up leaving the powerhouse area, where you train up all your abilities. I joined a discussion about the changes briefly in zone chat, and then logged out, never to return.

Obviously I didn't feel the game was interesting enough to warrant my paying $15 a month, but by far the coolest bit about it was that you could mix and match powers at your leisure. That was the only thing that kept me going for as long as it did in the first place, and without it, I have no interest in playing, even for free.

People who haven't played before might get a lot out of it though, but I suspect many of those who did and tried to return to it will be put off in much the same way as I was.

Well one nice thing they changed up in the early game is that after you finish the tutorial area you can now go straight to the main city. Before when you completed the tutorial area you picked from two starting areas that were slightly larger but kind of lame and boring IMO. Now atleast you can get straight into the more interesting areas.

I downloaded this last night and setup a new character. My old characters I'd created in the past where still there, one might have been one that you build from scratch which is supposed to be a feature you don't get with F2P.

When you create a character now you get to choose the basic classes, so there is a guy who shoots fire, ice, one that does mind control, one that does something that is like psychic energy, etc. Once you pick that class your powers and such are set to the default and you move to the next screen and into the game. I'm surprised they didn't change that starting area to be honest, I always felt the game started out terribly with that little startup training area. Just drops you right into a battle ground and gives you these really lame missions. Go kill 5 balloons over there, go talk to that guy. It technically works but it just seems like a bad way to introduce someone to the game. I'd rather they start you at some sort of super hero academy. It should be a bit quieter and you can feel like you're being trained rather than being dropped into combat.

Will be interesting to see how it goes, I didn't have time to do more than start a character.

Rift did this too, I fired that up and right out of the gate it's enemies all over. Kill this guy, kill that guy, scenery is impressive on that game, and this huge walking giant looking thing comes walking through the starting area, I just stood there in awe, that was awesome. I didn't go near that guy as I'm pretty sure he's flatten me.
