The bug with Boone, which no one can honestly tell me they don't have, is caused by a script error which causes him to go into a loop. It is only noticeable when you're in combat. It causes him to drop out combat, holster his weapon and then re-engage every 5 seconds when the script loops. The person who discovered and uploaded the fix to the NV Nexus found the error in the script and fixed it by adding two semicolons to comment out the lines causing the loop. I haven't used Boone since the patch... that does sound crappy. The problem with big publishers and such is that every patch has to go through QA, even if sucky QA, and with the consoles now there is certification and all that noise. They can't just fix the script in 2 minutes and upload it anymore, which sucks. |

By far most bugs though are in no way related to possible PC issues, and go right down to little things like the constant muttering of "I can't believe Primm wimped out and accepted NCR rule" when I instilled Meyers. I find it hard to imagine anyone paying attention isn't seeing a lot of bugs in even a short session.
I'd find it really easy to throw major criticism after major criticism at the game, the bugs, crappy combat, weak RPG elements, most importantly how uninspired most of it is... But actually for all the time you'll be sitting there having ideas for the game that very likely actually are better than many of those in the game, it does have it's moments and the other 100+ hours are in truth reasonably satisfying. As far as stability goes, the only time the game has crashed on me is in the Ultra Luxe bath house. That is one of the most posted problems at the official forums, but they did not fix it in the patch even though someone discovered the problem and made a mod to fix it.
I can forgive a few minor things with broken quests and dialog like people commenting on the wrong outcome of the Primm Sheriff (which there is a fix at the NV Nexus) since there are a lot of quests in the game. But when the mod community has fixed them and posted the fixes to mod sites, and the developers release a "major" patch that doesn't fix those little issues that the community has already discovered what is wrong, I can't understand.

I find it funny that you insist that's not possible considering the endless number of configuration differences you could have from me.
I haven't had a CTD problem with any game in five years. I can probably count the total number of CTDs I have had in any games on one hand in that same time period. I keep a clean PC and do not overclock, which I feel is a big part of it, but I am sure you will tell me your PC is perfect.
In any case, including the little dialogue flub you did tells me you are counting some very insignificant things as bugs. I may have been called a him when I was a her once or twice, I may have had an enemy get stuck in geometry a couple times, but that is pretty standard open-world games stuff and nothing serious enough for me to bitch about. Even if you count little things like that though I probably had a handful in 100 hours. I guess your standards are different from mine. |

I had not run into any game breaking problems with New Vegas (well there is the Ultra Luxe bath house) until the last patch came out and broke Boone, who is my current companion. How the fuck did they miss that in testing?
Was FO3 this bad before and during patches? I didn't play FO3 until after the last bug fix patch (I'm not counting the patches that added DLC support).
I haven't finished my first play through of NV yet. I was taking my time, doing lots of side quests and exploring everything along the way. I guess that could be why I hadn't run into many bugs, since I haven't progressed far into the main story. I did run into a few broken quests, for which there are user made fixes at the Nexus site. After the last patch, I disabled those fixes to see if they were fixed in the patch, and they aren't.
After the patch, besides Boone being fucked up, other companions kept randomly teleporting to my location after being told to wait. When just walking out in the Wasteland, ED-E kept teleporting in front of me. I could hear him buzzing behind me while walking/running, then all of the sudden he'd just appear right in front of me.
There are user made fixes for the problems introduced with the last patch and I could keep playing using these user made fixes, but it just killed my desire to continue. I'd be pissed to continue playing with these user made fixes to have problems later on if/when they get officially patched and it breaks my game causing me to have to start over. I honestly haven't had any of those issues, or any other issues, since the day the game came out. New Vegas has been stable and bug-free for me all along. I've been pretty lucky myself, in regards to not having the same issues clearly a decent chunk of the player base seems to be having.
I though point lookout was definitely the best of the DLC's for FO3. Haven't heard great things about dead money, but then again they really haven't shined with their DLC with any of their games, so I guess I can just hope some mega-awesome DLC comes out. It's fun to pretend. |

At least in my case I know one of the reasons: the combat is so ... freaking ... boring. I have the difficulty on the hardest level and it's still just dull. Every battle is EXACTLY the same thing. I even tried melee just to switch it up a bit. No difference. Sure turning up the difficulty made it so that I would (very occasionally) actually die, but that didn't change the mechanics of anything. Mods are your friend. |

Look at the situation with buildings. In NV, for what (non-storyline-related) locations there are, you get a room or two. There might be a couple of items worth scavenging. In 3, there are very detailed buildings and tunnels, all over the map, that have LOADS of enemies, and tons of collectibles.
I played a marathon session a few days ago, and I spent -- literally -- hours managing my inventory to try to actually craft some items (besides weapon repair kits) this time around. It was boring! So I'm actually hoping that any DLC's (that make it to the PC) are actually total combat fests, JUST LIKE Zeta and Broken Steel! Just wanting to throw that out there in case the creators are reading these comments. Well tastes differ... for me New Vegas was 10 times the game Fallout 3 was. No, it's not as much of a combat heavy amusement park, but that's a good thing for me. |

I dunno, I refuse to feel guilty - plenty of games still DEMAND my attention, so I can't be bothered with those that I merely feel like I SHOULD play. Wow, that is dead-on what happened to me, and I started out LOVING this game and singing it's praises to everyone who would listen. I just can't get myself to go back and finish it. With FO3 I really liked The Pitt and Point Lookout, more so the latter. I'll have to read more up on Dead Money to see which it is most like.
