IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Announced

1C and Ubisoft announce IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover, a new installment in the IL-2 series of combat flight simulators planned for release in March. The Eric Johnson-free game is set during World War II's Battle of Britain, and in addition to a standard edition, there will also be a Collector's Edition with a cloth map, a replica of the Pilot’s Notes on the Spitfire I, and a 150-page ring binder of pilot instructions. A feature list follows.

  • New aircraft: incredibly detailed true-to-life modeling of aircraft systems based on thousands of hours of dedicated research. Every single aircraft component can be damaged for realistic and immensely satisfying results.
    • Flyable aircraft – Over a dozen famous and highly detailed English, German and Italian aircraft available, with all crew positions open to players. All flyable aircraft have been painstakingly researched, resulting in incredibly accurate cockpit interiors (including Spitfire, Hurricane, Messerschmitt and the Stuka).
    • Non-flyable aircraft – 13 AI controlled additional aircraft are also available to allow an even more accurate and immersive experience thanks to a varied aircraft.
  • Immersive game modes:
    • Exciting Single-Player Campaign – The campaign thrusts the player into the middle of the battle. The player will join the British Air Force to fight the German forces and renegade pilots on his own side.
    • Massive multiplayer – Customizable modes range from simple deathmatch-style free-for-alls to epic, ongoing 128 player battles that can last hours, days, weeks, or even longer.
    • Interactive training – Comprehensive interactive training for new players – fly a real WWII trainer plane with a computer controlled instructor through a series of training missions.
  • Brand new setting – The battle will take place on a large area spanning London and southern England in the north, to Northern France and Belgium in the south. The huge map will contain thousands of historical cities, towns, roads, airfields, radar stations, ports, and industrial areas – all located exactly where they were in 1940.
  • New 3D engine – Latest-gen graphics engine with DX10 and DX11 API support. Huge variety of photorealistic ground vehicles, buildings and other environmental elements recreate minute details of 1940s Europe.
  • Customizable difficulty – dozens of realism options allow newcomers to the franchise to reduce the difficulty and focus on the fun while learning the ropes of being a pilot.

is oleg involved in this expansion? he needs to focus on finishing SOW.

This IS Storms of War. They just attached the IL-2 brand to it and changed the title to something a touch less generic.

ah i see. i was wondering how they will implement dx11 on the old stuff. so this is just a spiritual sequel to the series. it cannot use the aircrafts or missions of the old il-2.

to anyone who is interested simply do a search for storms of war on youtube for previews of the game engine. it will blow you away! this is what microsoft promised for the dx11 visuals of flight sim x but never delivered. rivet counters will rejoice!

EDIT: uhh, any word on what kind of draconian DRM will be used for the game?

The original Il-2 was released in 2001 and there were numerous expansions, stand alones, and re-releases with more addons included thru the il-2:1946 release several years ago. Without mods, the game featured hundreds of aircraft of which a large number were flyable. I forget exactly, but with the latest 4.10m patch for it the number is well over 200. The code was "cracked" a couple of years ago allowing mods for the first time beyond simple plane skins. The game was kept closed to modding because of the rabid MP community that had people using any and all means to cheat other players that resulted in many poor decisions (for SP only and coop-only players) just to thwart the cheaters.
With the cracking, cheating apparently is rampant again.

Anyway, the original game starts with the BoB because that's where WWII really started. Later releases (how they will be done is unknown at this point...integrating stand alones, expansions, DLC, etc) will expand the war to later periods and other theaters. I see another release as late as 2015 based on this same code if the Il-2 model was any indicator.

Oh...and the name is stupid and obviously Ubi's doing. There are NO Russian planes in this and no Il-2s because it's the BoB! Yet they use the name "Il-2" anyway for name recognition. It was supposed to be Storm of War (not a great name but at least distinct) until apparently last week!

excited!!!

Yes, and even if it's not released officially, I'm thinking the modding community is probably going to be all over this. Then again, I heard some of the past releases in this series weren't that mod-friendly. Anyone know the full picture? Thanks.

Only one of the most brilliant guitarists of our time! He's one of the one's who inspired me to play guitar.

Two other brilliant works of music:

Just read a little in 1C and Ubi forums.

P51 is not included and game will not use UBI always on DRM but 1 time activation. (apparently)

P51 seems clear as it was not around in this time period.

Yeah I kind of skimmed over the time period. I was hoping the game's campaign started at the battle of britain and ended with the wars end.

Escorting B-17 in day raid bombing was one of the mainstay jobs of the mustangs near the war's end and had some of the most intense dogfights ever. Oh well its bound to be included in one of the inevitable expansions/DLCs....

excited!!!

As a guitar player for the past twenty years, I'm ashamed to admit that I had never heard any of Eric Johnson's music until a few months ago, even though I remember his name being bandied about when I first started playing. Cliffs of Dover is superlative if you like his particular style, but I can also understand why some would dismiss it as muso frippery.

Before you all get excited, do not forget this game will most likely use UBISoft latest edition of their new "always online DRM". Normally I don't care as most ubi soft published titles suck or they force developers to rush their titles(ex: silent hunter 5) but I am afraid this game has potential to be good, just too bad about that drm.
