Elemental Expansion Detailed

Stardock announces details on Fallen Enchantress, the first expansion for Elemental: War of Magic, their fantasy-themed turn-based strategy game. The expansion will include "significant changes to the existing game as well as massive new content additions, including spells, magical equipment, quests, locations and creatures," when it is released in the second quarter of this year, and true to their word, Stardock will be offering it for free to all who purchased Elemental during 2010. Here's a bit more on the add-on: "In Fallen Enchantress players will be able to explore the world of Elemental and discover a wide range of unique locations, including dangerous wild lands that can’t be settled until they are conquered. There are areas like the Bhinadmi Fissure, a massive chasm that spawns demons and earth elementals, until a player goes to the edge and challenges the elemental lord that dwells within. These undiscovered lands contain new characters and creatures: from the tragic Butchermen who wander the lands around Red Springs trying to pass their curse off to another victim, to Morian the Ruin of Summer, who was once a powerful nature elemental who has been driven mad by the Cataclysm and the destruction of his forests."

The campaign for Elemental was so horrible I uninstalled it without even trying the other parts of the game. Bought he collector's edition, too. :p

That's why I didn't install it when it was released. I heard it was bad from the early reviews and decided to just wait for them to fix it before I bothered trying it out.

Worth $50 that I paid? No way. Worth $10? Yeah, I think so. Will I buy an expansion? I see no reason to at this point.
Since the expansion is free if you bought the game, you shouldn't have to pay for it. By the time it's out, they'll have had a lot more time to fix more of the AI and UI stuff too. They're also adding more spells I believe, and more quests as well. Should be interesting.

Playing Civ 5 is too tempting. Don't know if I'll start another game of Elemental.

So has anyone played Elemental yet? Beneath the bugs is the core game any good?

I can see a good game in it, it's just not there yet. I've played for many hours, though, so I feel like I got my money out of it. I don't really know about the campaign. I sorta skipped that and just played a bunch of skirmishes against the computer. Having said that, there's two main areas of Elemental that need improvement, AI and UI.

AI
The AI is just flat out stupid as of 1.1. Someone mentioned in the previous Elemental thread that the very latest update (last week some time) was almost all AI focused, so I really hope this has improved. Before, the AI didn't have a clue what it was doing. For example, I had a map where one melee unit was injured, so I moved him behind the other melee units. The AI couldn't path to it, so it just stood there while I beat on it, skipping turns and not doing anything. You can come across a group of 10 mobs and kill them all with 2 spells, taking zero damage. The mobs don't try to run, they don't do anything but their "move to X square and attack" moves. It's like playing with a blind person.

UI
The interface is awful. Little buttons that are hard to click, miss-clicking is easy all over the place, an equipment system that is just play crap, buttons that don't even work half the time. You can create a group of heroes and go forth to adventure. You click a single unit to view it, but then you forget you're viewing him and click a square and just the one unit moves leaving the others behind. Happened to me all the frickin' time. There's no rhyme nor reason to the equipment. It's just one big list and you get to scroll through it trying to see what you just got. You won't know if anything is an upgrade unless you exit the shop and enter the equipment screen (the button, if you recall, is broken 50% of the time).

I could go on and on about the UI and it's horribleness.

The spell system, leveling system, town system.. they're not bad. Spells are a bit useless, now that I think about it (I only used like 2 spells ever). I think, however, that spells would be better if the AI was better. Maybe I'd have a reason to use the other 90% of my spells instead of just single target attack #1 vs. AoE attack #2.

Questing should just be removed from the game. It's a "go here, go there" quest system. Absolutely no use.

City building can be frustrating if you haven't played much, mainly due to food and population caps. You can hit the cap and really hose yourself, ending up in you having to destroy buildings, but at least it forces you to make decisions. But, after you get a few towns, doesn't matter much anymore. There's not enough high level unique buildings that really matter much.

There's probably a lot of stuff I forgot. However, even after all that, I did have fun playing the game. Despite the seldom crashes, shit UI, and brain dead AI, it was fun. I liked watching the landscape change. I liked utterly destroying cities because they only had a unit or two watching them.

Worth $50 that I paid? No way. Worth $10? Yeah, I think so. Will I buy an expansion? I see no reason to at this point.

I remember when people praised Stardock when Sins of A Solar Empire came out, I was one of those people. Back to Elemental, I don't think they are being greedy, they made a critical failure on initial release. I've heard they fixed a lot of issues.

There's a difference though, Stardock didn't develop SoaSE, Ironclad games did. Stardock developed and published Elemental.

I figured they must have something in development, it makes no sense to patch up a game if you're not going to try and sell something at the end of that process.

Hopefully there will be a way to try this game at some point in the future.

I haven't bought Elemental yet (so I don't have the rage face everyone else has), I plan to when it drops its price down to 10 dollars or something.

I was a big Stardock Fan because of GalCivII and Sins. I bought Demigod and got burned, and planned on picking up Elemental if reviews were favorable. Needless to say, I still haven't bought it and my faith in Stardock has been shaken quite a bit.

I continue to watch them to see what happens, but they no longer get the benefit of the doubt. In fact, very few studios do anymore....*sigh*
