Serious Sam 3 Interview

The Croteam interview on Big Download talks with Croteam co-founder Alen Ladavac about what they are up to, with a focus on Serious Sam 3, their upcoming shooter sequel. This will use the same engine as the Serious Sam HD remakes, but Alen explains why the new game will look better than the high-definition remakes of their older ones: "Certainly even much more than with the HD remakes. They both run on the same base engine, but there are three factors contributing to SS3 looking even better: First of all, the engine was further improved in the mean time, and it is still being improved during the development. Then, there is this artistic limitation of pre-determined content in HD games. Since we wanted to faithfully reproduce the gameplay, we couldn't change the architectural layouts, which limited what could have been done visually with the levels, including lighting and immersiveness of the environment. Finally, of course, we've learned a lot in the process, so we now know how to create even better looking environments."

But if they make a point of keeping the gameplay exactly the same, then graphics are literally the only point of these games.

Yeah, that was obviously the reason... not that it would have involved more effort. Still, at least they put in more effort than Valve did with Half-Life: Source.

As for SS3 - I have little faith based upon the previous games. Sure they're fun but graphically they're about 5yrs behind the curve.
