Long cooldown on potions in Diablo 3: Diablo 3 >>> Diablo 2.
The potential is there, polish that nonsense up and ship it before the heat death of the universe.

Creston Creston, please. We both know Duke Nukem Forever will be released before Diablo III.
Diablo III isn't just a game - it's the next step in human evolution. This takes its time, you know. Ask the dinosaurs, they tested the Diablo I beta for Blizzard, just before the great cataclysm destroyed them. |

Well Guild Wars 2 isn't really competing with Diablo 3. It's a full fledged MMO. If anything, WoW is its closest competition. In fact the GW2 devs want the MMO world to realize you can get a AAA MMO experience without paying a monthly fee and it's really looking like they'll be able to pull that off. The fact that the GW2 devs aren't treating like a WoW competitor is refreshing, because they are free to make a unique experience without trying to remake WoW and hope they get a few subscribers to pay for their Porsches. (*cough*Alganon*cough*)
Even though I skipped Cataclysm I'll be picking up Diablo 3 provided it isn't slapped with a monthly fee for online or ridiculously OP items in the cash shop. I was pretty much sold with the Demon Huntress announcement. |

but diablo 3 does away with these stupid health potions - in fact, that change alone is COMPLETELY changing the game. You can no longer "tank" something by quaffing your entire inventory worth of stuff |

The greatest strategy was to force enemies through a doorway one at a time so they couldn't surround you easily.
Anything blizzard can do with diablo 3 to add more to the gameplay would be appreciated for people like me who want slightly more sophisticated gameplay. The Diablo games are built around the action, character build-up and loot collection. If you look at the Diablo 3 gameplay videos, its still simplistic action killing numerous mobs.
The only non-simplistic gameplay might be the boss battles. |

| Come on Diablo 2 had these same type of "Encounters" nothing new. There were enemies in Diablo 2 that would ressurect enemies and perform other various things that made you prioritize your targets. |

I think this encounters post demonstrates Blizzard is as least trying to take the extremely simplistic and boring and juice it up a bit. They acknowledge the situation.
The removal of potions as your main source of health (and slapping them with a cooldown), IMO, should make some battles far more frantic as well (wtb more health orbs!) and should address your issue with the keyboard button quick health regen.
You're right about the doorway thing, I hope that is addressed and I think it can be. For example: destructible environments, make many walls supporting doors destructible and make enemies smart enough to destroy those walls themselves so they can quickly overwhelm you if you're using that doorway technique. It's just some random quick idea, and I'm sure Blizzard could come up with something far better.

I think there's a real chance that Guild Wars 2 ends up being better than Diablo 3. It's clear that Blizzard's goal, first and foremost, is to sell copies to all their WoW customers. It seems to me that this business goal has the potential to really kill the underlying spirit of the series. The game should be a simple hack-and-slash on the surface but allow a ton of hardcore build optimization and heavy difficulty for those that seek it. Things like limiting characters to only five spells, removing the skill tree, and Blizzard comments about their goal of having the player feel close to dying without actually killing them tell me that it's now a simple hack-and-slash with nothing under the surface.

| Seeing how it took over 3 months for Blizzard to denounce a change to Diablo II for increasing the stash size of a few pixels, I think D3 is on track to be released for the next colonized civilization on Earth, after the coming ice age, in 35,000 years. Give or take a millenium or two. |
