Seems like every week there's either an article on Split Screen co-op rising or dying.

I don't see a change. Halo and Gears of War support it. CoD doesn't. Halo actually goes above and beyond by supporting split-screen co-op as well as split-screen online play, which is the ultimate and frickin' amazing. No one else really does that. The knock was that, in order to make it work, Halo needed an ass-ugly engine. I haven't played Reach yet, but from what I understand it looks modern but kept this functionality.

MW2 didn't even let you do 4x4 multiplayer with 2 Xboxes and 2 TVs, but Halo does.
And not letting you take local multiplayer online hurt the longevity of that game. People loved coming over to my apartment to play either single player, co-op or deathmatch, but everyone hated playing against me (as you're already assuming, these weren't the most hardcore players. Dominating them was simple.) Being able to go online with them would have let us play on the same team but still do DM. Only Halo is smart enough for this. If anyone wants to know why Halo is so damn popular - there you go.

The Split Screen coop dying article made be a bit sad and nostalgic. Streets of Rage (with my wife[then girlfriend]), Goldeneye (With my navy buds) , and Twisted Metal (with my son) all were some of the most memorable good times I've had with gaming. I haven't been a console gamer for a long time but that stuff was awesome.
