The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Announced

As noted in this Pete Hines tweet, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the next game in The Elder Scrolls series was announced at last night's video game awards, as the tweet says: "For all those who have been asking, TESV, sequel to Oblivion, has been announced. Skyrim will be here on 11.11.11. Wait till you see it." The Elder Scrolls Website has a teaser trailer for the game, which also concludes with that November 11 release date. On a related note, The Elder Scrolls Facebook page invites you to join the elder council, also offering this image from the trailer. This tweet indicates the game will be using an all new engine, which we would guess is id's Tech 5 engine being created for RAGE and DOOM 4.

The occasionally crazy radiant AI made for Oblivion's most memorable moments. Thieves, for example, were hilarious to watch. I remember seeing an Argonian thief "sneak" up to an NPC's face and pickpocket them in plain sight. Naturally, the NPC called the guards and every guard in town started chasing the Argonian around. Eventually, they surrounded him and beat him to death.

Another great moment was when I was tasked with murdering some old lady out in the mountains. I found her, threatened her and then she attacked me. I was about to pull out my dagger when my horse goes agro and starts pummeling the old lady. She then starts running away with my horse in hot pursuit. Moments later, an imperial ranger appears out of nowhere. I was concerned because I thought he was going to attack me or my horse but he starts chasing after the old lady as well. I stand there for like a minute watching as my horse and a ranger chase an old lady around in circles before beating her to death.

Good times.

Stop believing the hype, especially from Bethesda (so many bugs and lies.. remember all hype about radiant AI?). I'm done preordering games and paying to be a beta tester.

Actually, there's so much truth here, silonez, and Bethesda has a storied history of buggy games. Perhaps this game is already in beta and will spend the next 10 months polishing up, but I somehow doubt it. When I heard the 11.11.11 release date, I was a bit shocked. Given the scope of the previous games, the release date seems much too soon to guarantee a fairly bug free release. I waited 6 months to pick up Oblivion, and will probably wait 6 months to pick up this one.

Anyway, Blue, it's not using id tech 5 for sure. Some quick googling brings up:

Eurogamer: Is it fair to say then that it's based on existing technology?

Todd Howard: The technology is ours and it is inspired by the technology we have. We have a lot of it. But that's our starting point - the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware - with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that.

and

Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard explained in a separate interview with IGN that his game would not use id Tech 5. The studio's new engine built for its upcoming title is more beneficial to creating huge, open-world games, such as Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, while id Tech 5 is better for more contained environments.

"We decided to really reboot our technology after Fallout 3, so we had been making plans for that and started doing some things. The id thing came along later, so it's a mix of that plus the kinds of games we do are a bit bigger and more dynamic.

"Id Tech 5 is the best thing in the world at doing a very static environment that looks pretty and you're going to run through. But for the kinds of things I like to do, I like the world to be more dynamic."

Not to mention the megatexture issue, which rule out the sort of modding that we've come to expect from these games. It might be possible some day when Carmack has one of his genius moments, but as far as anyone knows there's no solution yet.

EDIT: According to this it might be an entirely new engine and not a new version of Gamebryo. Guess we'll see, although I'll rather trust Todd Howard to know what he's talking about than a random community manager (no offense to random community managers).

People complained endlessly about the radiant AI.

I didn't read a single preview for Oblivion, so I didn't hear all the hype. I ended up playing a game with some impressive world AI that had some interesting bugs but overall seemed more lifelike than most other worlds I've played in.

Simple solution: stop reading previews. They're never right. They serve no purpose other than marketing, typically marketing games still in early alpha with features that are going to drastically change.

This game's going to look very dated

I wish people didn't get so hung up on the engine; I don't think it has any such inherent limitation. Oblivion still looks pretty nice to this day with a bit of tinkering. Morrowind and Oblivion look completely different despite being on the "same" engine, and there's no reason to think there won't be a similar (or greater) jump in the tech this time around.

Sweet! I sincerely hope the new engine is as moddable as the previous games. I also hope Bethesda has learned from the modding community about what makes a better RPG. Oblivion was very promising but sorely lacking.

Does not the numerological release date speak of the occult/free masonry/etc?

There is no "Bethesda Engine", they use GameBryo. I'm not sure how this is going to work because as I understand it, the company that made GameBryo is in bad shape (their investors are trying to sell off their assets including this engine) and to boot, GameBryo is ancient and has no big updates coming that they've announced. This game's going to look very dated and have the same problems as other Bethesda titles if they don't move to new tech. I believe Bethesda also said they weren't going to license id Tech 5 so if they aren't keeping it for an in-house ace up their sleeve, why'd they acquire it?

I have to admit, hearing this makes me kind of stoked. I had a great time in Oblivion (despite the faults the game had). It was a beautiful world, with fun combat and a huge variety of interesting quests and locations. I admit I didn't get far on the main quest, I kept getting sidetracked with all the cool side quests that were available.

It's funny, a year ago I was thinking about playing Oblivion again, and just couldn't get motivated to lose another 40 hours in that game (despite all the mods that have fixed many issues with the original game). But hearing this makes me want to boot it up, apply some mods and play it again.

I hope they find the right balance for the leveling. It was disheartening in Morrowind to discover a totally cool dungeon only to find it way too easy b/c you should have found it 10 levels earlier. On the other hand, the auto-leveling in Oblivion was uneven and made some dungeons/adventures much too difficult.

Why does everyone jump on the id Tech 5 train? They started development of this game before they bought id and more importantly Todd Howard confirmed to Eurogamer it's a new version of the same engine they've always used.

If Morrowind was Bethesda engine 1.0 and Oblivion was 2.0 then this is 3.0, nothing more and nothing less.
