Quote of the Day

"I volunteer you to speak to EA’s studio heads; they’ll tell you the same thing. They’re very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you’re out. I think that model is finished. Online is where the innovation, and the action, is at." EA's Frank Gibeau to Develop. Thanks Ant via Slashdot.

That model is what most people still want. Oh and it's 40 hours of gameplay, not 25.
Sorry, I disagree, EA is right, the future is multiplayer. Single player is on it's way out.

The thousands of people who don't like multiplayer would disagree with you.

As would the sales of Red Dead Redemption, a game who's multiplayer is strictly window dressing.

And of course the announcements of ME3 and TES:5

[quote="If a game was made so that 100 players could deathmatch and play CTF, Capture Point, or other types of games online, but just in square boxes then it would not sell as well as a game that was just single player but with extravagantly decorated environments...the environment needs to be rich and entertaining...there needs to be a story of some sort...a reason for the battles...otherwise it will decay as the newness wears out and another game comes out with a different colored box to battle in or with slightly different weapons.
I think that you hit the nail on the head right there. Gamers need their fix. So, you give them some thing pretty and shiny and shallow. They play for a few months, then the next game or DLC can come out so the gamer needs it to keep experiencing the happy times of a "new" game. They know exactly what they are doing. They are feeding the populace one spoon at a time knowing that they want more.

EA has made many bad mistakes...this is just another one. Some of us remember when EA started sharing our personal information and afterward sent every registered EA user an agreement to sign saying that we wanted to allow them to give out our personal information. This is one more reason that Studios and Publishers need to be completely separate. EA is full of marketing and sales personnel who are trying to run it like a cost/demand business.

The truth is that it really doesn't matter whether it's Single Player or Multiplayer...the only reason a game gets sold and played more than others is because it's fun. If a game was made so that 100 players could deathmatch and play CTF, Capture Point, or other types of games online, but just in square boxes then it would not sell as well as a game that was just single player but with extravagantly decorated environments...the environment needs to be rich and entertaining...there needs to be a story of some sort...a reason for the battles...otherwise it will decay as the newness wears out and another game comes out with a different colored box to battle in or with slightly different weapons.

When will companies, not just game companies, realize that the sales and marketing people lack creativity and inspiration and should not be driving any form of product. Let the developers and studios create the products...then it's the sales and marketing job to sell it...that's the way it works best.

I don't think single player is going anywhere, there are just far too many gameplay scenarios where multiplayer simply wouldn't work. The internet is filled with idiots and assholes (no offense). I do not look forward to the day where my enjoyment of a video game rests solely on those I am playing with or against.

When a new game has both modes, I usually play the single player first to get a feel for the gameplay and experience a story.

He's not talking about the death of singleplayer, he's talking about the death of DRM free offline games. These companies are orgasming over the idea of a future where everything is online, sold as a service and completely under company control for all time.

And the market won't stagnate if all you play is mindless slaughter of fellow humans, but wrapped in a different coat of paint?

That's fine if that is a segment of the market, but I think the gaming market would implode if that is all it aims to become.

It will certainly work in the short term, but I don't see how it can work in the long term. How many times can companies keep on increasing prices for generic maps where the player supplies the AI, the player supplies the atmosphere, the player supples the dynamic component, the player supplies the emotional connection, the player supplies the comedy, etc.
Uhh...what do these developers do again?

I dunno if it's my English, or the fact it's 3:49 AM for me atm... but while I was reading the quote I was sure it was someone saying bad stuff about EA in an overly sarcastic fashion. When I read it was someone from EA.. I was like "Huh?".

Seriously, try reading it from my perspective.

Singleplayer is dead my ass. If that's truly gonna be the case in the near future, I'd best start looking for a new hobby.

Funny thing is I spent more time on single player Q3 and UT than I have on any other game I've ever played. It was before broadband took over and playing with a 56k modem sucked bad so I spent my time playing the bots and for a while it seemed it would never get old. I played those 2 games exclusively for 3 years straight and I haven't found a game since that could even compete with them. Ahh those were fun times...

Remember UT and Q3? Both of those were created under the premise that single player was mostly dead.

I'm pretty sure UT and Q3 were created under the premise that their respective series were better at multiplayer than single-player and so there was no need to waste time on single-player campaigns. I'm inclined to agree. My favorite games tend to be purely single-player or purely multiplayer. Games that try to offer both usually end up failing in both regards.

EA has a bad habit of thinking their contemporary business practice is "the future". Then they get left behind to some niche genre explosion or a company that works on inventive gameplay and storytelling ... only to buy said company and grind them into their "new futuristic" business practice.

Their inability to see above the bottom-line will forever leave them disrespected by gamers, yet they will be profitable.

Welcome to the hall of shame, gibeau.
