FINAL FANTASY XIV Extension, Shakeup

Square Enix announces a postponement to the release of the PS3 edition of FINAL FANTASY XIV and the indefinite extension of the free trial for the PC edition of the MMORPG (thanks Augur.DW). Word is: "Since the launch of the Windows PC version, we have taken a number of actions based on user feedback to provide them a better game experience including a major version update in late November. In addition, we have decided to extend the free trial period until after we can confidently present customers with a plan outlining a level of enjoyment that will satisfy both us and our customers." This forum post addresses this as well, and also mentions personnel changes, saying they are to "improve the service of FINAL FANTASY XIV." Here's more:

These members will make up the development team's new core-a core dedicated to ensuring we achieve a level of enjoyability that will more than satisfy our customers. Under a schedule of more frequent version updates, the new leaders and their respective sections will strive for continued improvements to FINAL FANTASY XIV service operation and development.

[Extension of the Free Trial Period]
As stated above, the newly restructured team's top priority is to bring about improvements to the game's enjoyability, and therefore we have decided to extend the free trial period until we can provide a plan that outlines a level of enjoyment that will satisfy both us and our customers. When we are confident that we have reached that goal, we will notify our customers immediately.

[Future Version Updates]
At present, the development team is putting the finishing touches on the previously announced version update, which is still slated for release in mid-December. In addition, there is one more version update scheduled for release before year's end. Details on the content and dates of these updates will be released in the near future.

As rough of a start as it's gotten off to, I'm almost regretting not getting in at launch... this extended trial is likely long enough that I would've gotten my money's worth regardless.

The game is incredibly repetitive and problematic even for an MMO. If you think beating your head against wall is fun then I guess maybe you would have gotten your money's worth but there is a reason even the Japanese are shunning this game. They are extending the trial so they don't get sued or lambasted in the press even worse than they have been already.

I bought this game at release, played it for a couple days and quit.

The biggest problem for me is that there were no US servers. So even with a great internet connection you were lucky to have a 250 ping...a far cry from the 20-30 ping I have for any other game.

If you want to do business in a country, have servers in that country. That goes for US countries wanting to do business in Japan, and vice versa.

Funny, there are US WoW servers, and most people consider a 250ms ping to be pretty good to them

I have an excellent internet connection at home and latency to the various WoW servers has always been a bit high. (And before you blame my connection, it's 22mb down/5mb up, and various speed test sites show an average latency of around 20ms.)

This game just straight up sucks. Its not fun, the mechanics are wonky and ITS NOT FUN!!!

However, Cataclysm has totally changed the face of World of Warcraft and I am back playing after a 3 year lay off and having just as much fun as when it was first released.

From what I have read the real issues are fundamental design problems. I don't see how a patch or two can fix it.

for a game called final fantasy it's pretty ironic to have had 14 versions.

This is the same company working on the new console Dance Adventure game, Deus Ex "Dancing with the Stars Gold 3D - I lost my Tutu"
The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Rough start is a understatement. SE never started fixing the more pressing issues with the game till AFTER the beta. Hell there is still a fair amount of crap to bitch about that is still in the game from Alpha.
