Out of the Blue

Happy birthday DOOM, as it was on this day in 1993 that id Software's seminal first-person shooter was first released, and I will definitely be playing some of the grand old game today to celebrate. Out of curiosity, I installed the original shareware version on a Vista machine, which doesn't run, though it may be able be coaxed into action with a little work. That installation process also served as a startling reminder of the good old days of DOS gaming, as the installer asks for your music card, its port address, your sound FX device, its port address, its (shudder) IRQ, and its DMA channel, and of course you must configure your controls before launching the game. The only thing that could make that trip down 640K memory lane more complete would be to install a modem and start messing with init strings.

Just for kicks: http://www.lazylaces.com/56Kmodem/ ... My dial-up modems only connect 24000-31200 (mostly 28800) even on 56k modems. The phone lines and systems here SUCK!

Heh! Back in end of 1993, I got a new 486 DX2/66 with a SB16 ISA. Oooh, I remember DEU.

Argh ... just watched the opening sequence to Saving Private Ryan. Yet again same result, dumb silence. Theres really nothing you can say to that amazing visceral movie genius, a fitting tribute to those that were there & the camera men that made miles of camera footage only for it to be lost to the depths on the day.
I know we are celebrating Doom & the early days of gaming online but I will say I have had moments in recent online gaming that have just left me thinking, fuck how far things have come.
Medal of honor online play made by DICE is not that far removed from like being inserted in the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan most of the time also helped by 5.1 sound making it an incredibly visceral gaming experience.
Who ever thought I wonder if these games will ever reach the point where its like being in a movie?
I really have had that question answered of late.

I remember playing DOOM at 9600-28800 with my next door neighbor/friend's dial-up modem and MajorBBS' SirDOOM (up to four players!).

DOOM will be legal age in a year!

I used to just brute force those setup screens until the game worked and then I would write down the settings.

After a while I could properly identify things but still had no idea why they needed to be that way.

I never realized how long it's been since I last dealt with IRQ conflicts, manually setting up sound cards, etc. Ah the DOS/Win95/98/NT days. I liked those days actually. It was more frustrating b/c you had to deal with low level crap constantly, but that's what made it fun! Now things just work. Where's the fun in that!? lol

Oh and manually setting dip switches and jumpers!

And I too will play some Doom today. I'll likely use the ZDoom port. It seems to be my fav for whatever reason. Perhaps I'll play Doom on my iPod touch too. I actually still play Doom regularly anyway and I've been considering getting back into map making. There's still a lot of people that continue to do it and there's some pretty amazing maps still coming out.

A lot of my best friends I met because of Doom. Back before we had the internet, there was a local BBS. It didn't have much on it, but on the logoff page there was a place to post a message for others to see when the logged off. One day I posted my phone number and said to call if you want to play some Doom DM. One guy called, we dialed up and played for a couple of hours. I was using the mouse to play, and I could tell he used the keyboard. I totally smoked him, he didn't get a single kill the whole night. I never heard from that guy again.

Another guy called later, who was pretty evenly matched with me. There were a few more, and eventually we all knew each other through Doom. This eventually led to our first LAN party, a whopping four of us playing Doom and Duke3D.

Eventually the internet came, the BBS shut down, Quake replaced Doom & Duke3D, but we continued to grow. A couple of them opened a computer business together, and we started having LAN parties every weekend at their store. We never advertised it, it just spread by word of mouth. Every weekend we just showed up with our computers. New people would find out and show up. For a while we were having 12 to 20 people showing up every weekend. Those were the good old days.

When you jumped into a game the first 5 minutes were constant typing as EVERYONE playing greated you, & you got to know everyone.
Type in cya at the end of a session & a stream of gg cyas filled the screen.
There must have been 100 people in the country back then that even knew the community existed at all.
Someone I used to have alot of lol moments with had the handel Dracon if I remember rightly.

Yeah all that "fun" setting up autoexec.bat and config.sys. I think I managed to set up a multiplayer game ONCE, then said screw it until Gamespy came out- by that time, it was Quake II.

That stuff is what appealed to the gearhead in me. I probably would have never got into computers and computer gaming otherwise. Hrm, on the other hand if I never did that I'd probably be ruling the world right now, haha!

Is this a good time to point out how much I love DirectX and its ability to do all that thinking for us?

I agree, Microsoft is awesome.
