Well they are saying 32 million+ consoles in the UK for that , what 62 million people, about 1/2 Brits?

I would own 3 computers you could call a gaming PC (upgrade 12-18 monthish) Do I count as 3?

RTFA headline. The topic is UK console base to which I believe ASJD was saying 3+ million gaming PC's for just the UK which sounds about right if one says that any PC with a reasonably modern graphics card (past four years).

UK population is 61.2 million. 3 million gaming PC's means one in twenty Brits has a gaming PC. Sounds like a reasonable guess.

3+ million for the world population is grossly understated so he was referring to UK. 10+ million for just the UK means 1/6 Brits has a gaming PC?

Perpetual debt is slavery.

Are there sales figures anywhere out there for video cards? How many Radeon 4770 & faster or GeForce 260 or faster cards do you think are out there? That'll pretty much give you the installed base of gaming cards.

How many video cards do you have to sell to remain profitable? There've got to be more than a few million of those.

Edit: Some Googling revealed no primary sources, but there were comments on blogs about Nvidia selling 800,000 Geforce 8800 GTXs and GTSs in only three months, and about AMD selling about 300,000 5850/5870s in its first couple of months, and that there's about a global market for 20 million video cards.

Actually thanks to consoles these days people can get away with gaming on lesser chipsets than most of us would consider. I was reading a recent review of an HTPC box that had an Nvidia ION chipset and it could still play things like L4D2 and WoW at what the masses would probably think is playable.

Depends on the laptop... all Macbooks have discrete GPUs, although most of them are pretty poor. I really wouldn't want to game on a mobile GPU any lower than the Radeon 4650 that's in my laptop, and that's not exactly a) a stellar GPU, but sadly b) still a relatively high-end option in a mid-sized laptop.

You can play WoW just fine on a pretty mediocre system right now.

But just the Steam hardware statistics alone say there are more then 3 million decent gaming rigs. Not top of the line, but decent.

The avg daily CONCURRENT users on Steam is a usual high point of 3 Million. Are you telling me no one else has a gaming rig?

The latest numbers if I remember correctly said something that only about 60% or so (can't remember) of consoles are connected to the internet. I think it is safe to say there are a hell of a lot of people that play games that don't use Steam and also those that aren't connected to the 'nets.

I hate to use it as an example - but Wiki shows there are apprx 12 million WoW subscribers. Take that for what you will....

While I am certainly more optimistic than you on the number, I did find that particular comment hilarious.

My guess? Nobody bloody knows.

How do you track that, when anyone with a little bit of know-how can throw a nice rig together on their kitchen table?

Probably another reason that so many are so interested in proclaiming the death of the PC, come to think of it...@#$%s up their precious marketing metrics.
