Dune 2: The Golden Path

A new version 1.1.08 of Dune 2: The Golden Path is now available, updating this multi-platform, freeware game based on the original Dune 2, the seminal real-time strategy game. Here's the explanation of this project from its developer: "This is my attempt to recreate the original Dune 2 from the ground up, using completely original code and incorporating modern-day RTS features (and compatibility with Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux and Mac), with a focus on the multiplayer experience. The only things taken from the old Dune 2 are the graphics, sound, and gameplay style." Thanks Ant.

Why arent there game studios like this anymore? or are we just all old, and tired of innovating something original?

In anycase, thank you for this headline, and I wish to donate $50 to the creator of this. pls pm me, I will paypal you.

In the early days of PC gaming, graphics sucked so developers had to do most of their framework on interesting concepts and deep gameplay. But, as technology progressed, players wanted better visuals as we are, after all, sight oriented creatures.

Developers started spending far more time on graphics, and the engines needed to support them, then they did on the gameplay and the concepts of the games itself.

That's what happened.
Yep, I seem to have more fun with old games even with the ones I used to play like on Atari 2600 and 1980/80s arcades. :/

I discovered this original game 'by accident' back in the day, it was a calling of some kind. A local computer store (the glory days before Wallmart and Friends ever existed) was demoing this game, and I saw... units, fighting, in real time.

I spent an extra $250 (on top of the $3,000 already spent on a 80386-33MHz) to get 4 more megs of 30pin simms to get more units on the screen.

I must have played Dune2 for 2 years straight non stop. What a great time to be a lucky kid playing PC Games such as this. News of the upcoming original Command & Conquer whet my appetite for RTS genre, I miss WestWood Studios.

We're old and greedy companies don't care anymore. If you look at indie games, they have interesting ideas.

Try contacting through the web site and/or forum that was linked above to donate?

Mmn Egghead Software.. I sold software there on 360KB 5 1/4" floppies. No baggies, though. Good times.

Dune 2 rocked. I used to defeat the AI by building a wall across the entire map. And then there were the lovely spoken announcements:

"Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed."
You could do that in C&C:TD game too with sandbags.

Cutscenes, especially the introduction/intro. were radical/rad. The hard levels sucked though. Ugh.

I worked at an Egghead up in Beaverton, OR for about two months.

I was fired because customers would ask my opinion on a software title and, if I had one based on my own experience and usage, I would give it to them. Politely.

Except manufacturer's reps didn't like it when you told a customer to not waste their money on a buggy mess and, instead, opt for a competitors product that was soooo much better.

Just please tell me you can select more than one unit at a time in this one! I lost countless hours to the original game. Wow, that was a long time ago
I forgot about that. So annoying. I was in high school and playing it on my IBM PS/2 Model 30 286 10 Mhz with the original Sound Blaster card (think I bought it from Egghead). Dang, I am old.

You're not that old.
Hmmph. I feel OLD.
