In anycase, thank you for this headline, and I wish to donate $50 to the creator of this. pls pm me, I will paypal you. In the early days of PC gaming, graphics sucked so developers had to do most of their framework on interesting concepts and deep gameplay. But, as technology progressed, players wanted better visuals as we are, after all, sight oriented creatures.
Developers started spending far more time on graphics, and the engines needed to support them, then they did on the gameplay and the concepts of the games itself.
That's what happened. Yep, I seem to have more fun with old games even with the ones I used to play like on Atari 2600 and 1980/80s arcades. :/ |

I spent an extra $250 (on top of the $3,000 already spent on a 80386-33MHz) to get 4 more megs of 30pin simms to get more units on the screen.
I must have played Dune2 for 2 years straight non stop. What a great time to be a lucky kid playing PC Games such as this. News of the upcoming original Command & Conquer whet my appetite for RTS genre, I miss WestWood Studios.

Dune 2 rocked. I used to defeat the AI by building a wall across the entire map. And then there were the lovely spoken announcements:
"Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." "Harkonnen unit deployed." "Harkonnen unit destroyed." You could do that in C&C:TD game too with sandbags.
Cutscenes, especially the introduction/intro. were radical/rad. The hard levels sucked though. Ugh. |

I worked at an Egghead up in Beaverton, OR for about two months.
I was fired because customers would ask my opinion on a software title and, if I had one based on my own experience and usage, I would give it to them. Politely.
Except manufacturer's reps didn't like it when you told a customer to not waste their money on a buggy mess and, instead, opt for a competitors product that was soooo much better. |
