VGA Nominees

The Spike Video Game Awards 2010 Website has the nominees for this year's awards. Though they maintain their futuristic approach ("Games released between November 25, 2009 and November 23, 2010 were eligible for nomination"), it seems this year has fewer nominees that haven't been out long enough to warrant the honor (though the week-old Call of Duty: Black Ops earned seven nominations). Word is: "Leading the way with ten nominations is BioWare's epic sci-fi RPG "Mass Effect 2," including nods for Game of the Year, Best Xbox 360 Game, Best PC Game and Best RPG. Rockstar Games' Wild West action-adventure title "Red Dead Redemption" racked up nine nominations, including Game of the Year, Best Action Adventure Game, Best Graphics and Best Original Score. Both Bungie Studios' smash hit first-person shooter "Halo: Reach" and Activision's blockbuster "Call of Duty: Black Ops" received seven nominations each, including Game of the Year, Best Shooter and Best Multi-Player." The two-hour show will air live on Saturday, December 11 at 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PST, and will also include looks at Batman: Arkham City, BioWare's "Next Blockbuster Title," and director Guillermo del Toro's THQ gaming franchise. Here's the list of game of the year candidates:

"Call of Duty: Black Ops" (Activision/Treyarch)
"God of War III" (Sony Computer Entertainment/SCE Studios Santa Monica)
"Halo: Reach" (Microsoft/Bungie Studios)
"Mass Effect 2" (Electronic Arts/BioWare)
"Red Dead Redemption" (Rockstar Games/Rockstar San Diego)

Hmm, let's see here...

Big-budgets? Check.
Bigger marketing budgets? Check.
Sequels? Check.
Action games? Check.

Sigh.

...You rate RDR over ME2?

RDR is a better overall experience. ME2 has more replay value however. If I had to choose one or the other then it would be RDR.

I don't even own RDR and I played and watched it more than I could force myself to play the ME2 snooze fest I bought.

I should actually get someone to come over and play ME2 for me, I'd like to watch the story, I just don't want to run through barren set pieces with waist high walls and the occasional safe containing worthless credits.

RDR had some flaws, but it's easily the most fun I've had with a game in a long time.

I've played all the game on that list except Reach, and I have to say that Red Dead Redemption does deserve it amongst the lot. It's a more complete game than any of the other choices, even though none of them are bad as such. Obviously the list won't satisfy PC gamers but then nothing ever can, so why even bother.

Also the only one of those I've played thus far.

But would probably be the easy choice regardless.

Honestly they are all good titles, but I would have to agree that Red Dead Redemption hit a higher mark then the rest of the games on that list.

Dear Spike TV:

Besides WoW, I spent more time playing Minecraft. I think that game definitely deserves an award though it isn't "finished".

IMO Amnesia was my favorite game of the year; it was a game that popped out of nowhere and blew me away by it's innovativeness and slick polish. I ate up Mass Effect 2 pretty quick, loved it at the time, just wish it didn't feel so much like a movie and felt more like a game, I still give it second. Third, I'd give to Fallout New Vegas - besides the glitches, it's a great addition to the Fallout family.

I'd vote ME2. Not sure why Halo Reach is even on their there though...

Reach is really excellent. It's definitely one of the best games that came out this year...and that's from someone that's not a fan of the series, and hadn't played one of them since quitting the first Halo without finishing it.

God of War 3 was awful, though, in my opinion, and has no place on that list. It wasn't even the best game in that genre this year (Dante's Inferno was just plain better, and so was Castlevania), forget about being one of the games of the year.

These awards are less about rewarding actual innovation and more about advertising products via a souped-up television ad show on Spike. What total payola did these publishers have to pay to get their games on the list?

Hopefully, this isn't news to anyone

5 titles with zero innovation.

RDR is the only one that even comes close to deserving an award.

Red Dead Redemption really deserves it this year, it was a phenomenal game in just about every respect. My only lament is that there is no PC version, it is really a game begging for one.

Curious as to why New Vegas isn't there, anyways. Just not that curious.

It is Spike, after all.

The best RPG category always makes me laugh. It's obvious no one there even knows what an RPG is. Fable 3? The train-wreck known as FF13?

How about Resonance of Fate? Mount & Blade Warband? Arc Rise Fantasia? Divinity 2? Hell you could even put Breath of Death 7 in there simply for trying something hilariously new (sort of).

As always, the awards are a joke.
