APB to Return Next Year

GamersFirst announces a confirmation of the rumor from last week that failed online shooter APB: All Points Bulletin is now the property of K2 Network, which will operate under the GamersFirst free MMOG label. The game from closed developer Realtime Worlds is slated to come back online in the first half of next year while they work on turning it into what GamersFirst COO Bjorn Book-Larsson calls "a true free-to-play game." They also have word that the deal means the developers from Realtime Worlds will be receiving their back pay. "We are obviously very happy to have concluded the sale but at the same time very much regret the loss of jobs as a result of the closure of Realtime Worlds," said Paul Dounis of restructuring specialist Begbies Traynor. "As a consequence of the IPR asset sale all outstanding wages and holiday pay claims will be met in full. GamersFirst is a pioneer in the free-to-play space, thus APB will be re-launched as a free-to-play model game rather than the previous retail model. People who previously bought the game can now look forward to playing it again once it’s back online."

The one thing that made me wish (hard) for this game's failure was the insulting monthly fee.

If it goes F2P, I'll definitely at least try it. I've heard it isn't as bad as it was made out to be from several sources I trust. Incidentally, I tried Global Agenda after it dropped its monthly fee and ended up quite addicted.

Not holding my breath for this to not be ruined by K2, but free play is always a plus.

I'll never understand the persistent, massive world.. and then instanced combat. instanced combat in a PvP game is a terrible mechanic and really takes away from the gameplay of an FPS.

You didn't play the game.

There's no persistent massive world. There's no PvE so qualifying the combat as PvP is unnecessary and it's a third person shooter.

I think if anyone was given the same budget... just about ANYONE could have done better.

I'd make sure the game had land sharks with lasers! Oh, and killer bees armed with toasters!

Hopefully it isn't as full of cheaters as some of the past comments have made it out to be.

It was. It was less an issue if you were playing an Enforcer because the major hacking clan was Crimson Order, and they played Enforcers mostly as far as I know. They got scared for a little while when a few prominent cheaters were banned, but then the announcement that APB was shutting down came out and the cheaters knew there would be no more consequences from RTW for their actions. People were talking about it openly in chat. I played every day for a couple hours and during the time frames I played, i would say fully 30-40% of the opposition was using hacks(gut feeling, based on known hack behaviors). Last day, I think it was closer to 60-75%. It was rampant.

I'm looking forward to being able to play it again.

Car chases with three of your friends propped up out the windows firing wildly are tons a fun.

While I was playing I didn't see any blatant hacking or face anyone impossibly good. Hopefully it isn't as full of cheaters as some of the past comments have made it out to be.

I think there's a lot to like about the game.
Had it sat around another 9 months and been polished, and by polished I mean gameplay-wise, it could have been a blast.

Do that polish, make it F2P, and add in all the backend marketplace stuff that was discussed (crafting, art, and the ability to have real-world items fabricated from in-game models) and it could be kind of awesome.

At release, though, it was a bland game that cost $50 and would almost definitely lose your interest before demanding more money.

Maybe I'm weird, but I really liked this game.

I liked it pretty well, too. It needed work, and I didn't want to pay a monthly fee for it, but it was fun for what I played.

I love how so many are talking about the game like it will never evolve.
Grow up you jaded fuck wads. I'd like to see anybody in this thread make better.
If the game didn't have a retard at the head of the development, it probably would have done much better. Even with all the glorious fuck ups, it was nearly a success.

Out of curiosity, was that your opinion of the game the first time around as well? The part where you say it will do very well I mean...

WTF are you even asking? Sit down....take a deep breath and then think about what it is you're wanting to ask. This way you can write a question that everyone, not just yourself, can understand.

I agree...this was a fun game. Most of the people who are whining about the game being bad or whatever have never even played it!

Yeah it had some obvious issues but it was a blast to play! Who the hell didn't like playing cops and robbers as kids? This is that game! The game play is a mix of Counter Strike and GTA.

Great game and it will do very well as free to play.

I'm certain that K2 will address the cheating issues, and fix what's wrong. What I think will be interesting is to see if they remove the swearing from the game in order to reach a wider audience. (Honestly, every NPC in the game swears often and hard. Consistently. It made me laugh to see a guy dressed like a businessman swear like a sailor.)
