GOG.com Re-Launch Gift

GOG.com announces a follow-up to their maybe we're closed stunt that preceded their re-launch, offering a gift to everyone who used their service during its two-year beta period:

Any user who created an account before we closed down the site and moved out of beta (that's September 20, 2010) will receive Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games for free! We'll be adding the game automatically to your accounts during the next days, so don't worry if the game is not yet there.

Of course, we're not forgetting about all those users who joined the GOG family in the last few weeks. Together with Strategy First we're launching a special promotion to offer their GOG catalogue at a 50% discount.

If you've been a part of GOG beta and you already bought Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games, please click here, as we have an alternative gift for you.

I purposely unsubscribed because I didn't want to hear anything else from this company after their childish little boy who cried wolf stunt but low and behold in my inbox today. At the bottom of the email in tiny print I see:

We're sending this newsletter to all GOG users, even those who unsubscribed from it, as it concerns an update of your GOG.com account. You don't need to unsubscribe from our newsletters again, as we're sending it only this one time.

We're going to ignore your preferences and do whatever we want but we won't do it again, we promise. These idiots don't even have enough respect for their userbase to follow simple privacy and contact preferences. Planescape Torment or not, you're on my spam filter now GOG.

So, basically, if you didn't own the pretty ancient Deadly Games, you're stuck with it, but if you did own it, take your pick of many more much newer, better games.

Better?

It's essentially saying, taking the worst view, "here are some year old roses, but if you already have roses here's a kick in the balls."

Yeah I know, they STILL haven't done anything at all to convince me they mean any of these "apologies." Everything I've seen indicates they are treating it like a huge joke, with essentially contempt for the customers. Like that whole monk thing. The attitude isn't changing, so having people running the site who think and feel and act like that isn't something that makes me want to buy games from them.

Yeah, but it's still nice. I'd already forgotten about all the broohaha.

In another example of GOGs whack marketing team missing the point, the 'alternative' gift is any game from Strategy First.

Also, can I trade in my free copy of Jagged Alliance and get IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 instead? Or Icewind Dale?

I'm kidding. Well, maybe.

It's a lesser JA game, even if you get multiplayer working, but enjoy Gus Tarballs. He was a welcome addition to the series.
