Beamer wrote on Oct 13, 2010, 15:52: Christ. The industry is fucked up right now. It's more than just this industry, I guess it's America as a whole these days, but there's so little trust by the little guy of the big guy. Everyone thinks they're smarter and they know better, and everyone thinks that it's screw or be screwed. You are exactly right. It is America as a whole these days. This is not a problem caused by the "gaming industry" this is a systemic problem of corporate culture that has permeated every publicly traded commodity. It's glaringly apparent to the gaming community because our golden years weren't that long ago. But it's the same bullshit we've seen everywhere since the Reagan administration (and of course the Industrial Revolution). Upper management ignoring long term sustainability for short term dividend increases. This wouldn't be happening if the tax structure didn't encourage it, but that's getting off track.
I remember a time when id software would publicly release the source code for every one of their game engines, remember that? Remember how it lead to an exploding modding community, which in turn lead to a boom in online gaming magazines like GameSpy.com (planetquake, planetdoom, etc) and entire computer hardware markets being created to cater to that community? How many kids do you think learned C programming or 3D modeling because they wanted to be a part of the modding community? Or learned the inner workings of a computer because they wanted to upgrade their graphics cards?
Or how about companies like Valve? Their modding community has produced COMMERCIAL successes and their Steam platform is putting brick and mortar shops out of the distribution market entirely. These are just glaring examples of the success of progressive (yea i said it) business practices that are putting these gaming companies at the top while mega-conglomerates like EA survive solely on a few IPs and acquiring better development studios. That's their solution to a lack of innovation... mergers and acquisitions.
It needs to be called out for what it is, bullshit. Companies like Valve just prove it to be so. What did they do when they wanted new IP's? They went to the Independent Games Festival, found an indie game they loved from the kids at DigiPen Institute of Technology and hired them all right out of college. They didn't take over a competitor, cannibalize it's staff, and put an army of copyright lawyers to work against the gaming community. Then turn around and claim all this lost revenue is due to piracy.
It's bullshit. All of it. The rhetoric of capitalistic business decisions and competition in a global market is just a smoke screen for framing their opportunistic actions as something that's entirely out of their control. Curt Schilling, the Red Sox pitcher (and Republican activist), created 38 Studios in Massachusetts. They haven't even released a single title yet and he had tried to create a bidding war between MA and Rhode Island to see who would give him the bigger tax break, claiming that taxes were stifling innovation. Meanwhile Massachusetts has dozens of development houses creating games like Bioshock, Guitar Hero, and Lord of the Rings Online (you may remember the recent free to play = revenue doubling story for LotRO).
So don't sit there and claim it's the big guy versus the little guy in a screw or be screwed world, it's not. It's corporate greed protected by political ideology to get while the gettin's good. The top 1% has just become so wealthy that they've dragged the gaming industry into it. |
