Codies on F1 2010 AI

The Codemasters Forums have a response to user complaints about the artificial intelligence in Formula 1 2010, their new F1 racing sim, along with an acknowledgement that some issues players have identified will require patching. They do, however, refute accusations that the AI drivers don't actually navigate the course when out of the player view, though they do admit this is the case during practice & qualifying to accommodate the jump-to-sector feature and the fast-forward feature in this mode and explain a texture swapping issue that doesn't allow switching between car views during race replays. They also deny their AI is oversimplified, saying: "The AI system implemented in F1 2010 is very complex, and is certainly not scripted in any way." They also present a vigorous defense of their race AI: "As none of the above feature restrictions are relevant in the race itself, we DO NOT use any other systems in the race other than the AI cars all physically driving the race just as the player does. Other factors also contribute to the AI lap times and the variation in their race pace. These include race start behaviours, their ultimate race pace which takes into account elements such as fuel and tyre degradation, weather, conserving / cooling engines etc, their in and out laps in the pit stop phase and their finishing pace."

FOREVER

Moving up to the double M, 2000. I eat up a decade like a flan. Your turn of the century, turn it up, turn it up - clock seconds to the hour, go and cash the millenium. ummm ummm, and it hums like a migraine, to the brain in the time yet remaining.. but, uh, ah, melancholy nonsense... and I crack nouns, brotherfuck the verb tense

Only because Zardoz has made it so.

TABERNACLE!!!!!!

Hmm, you know I wouldn't have had any idea what the hell you were talking about until I just happened upon Zardoz showing on Fox Movie Channel the other day. I had been curious what your avatar was about...And...

...My god, I want that hour back! At first I was like, 'ok, kinda quirky, but a lot of 70's movies are like this so...' but the more I watched, the more confused I became. After little more than an hour I couldn't watch any more and turned to Secrets of WW2 on Military Channel instead. It was like my brain was turning to a gooey soup until I turned it and then I started feeling...err...human, again...I just went to wikipedia and looked Zardoz up and found that I understood absolutely nothing about the film. Clearly, it's something to watch with some friends, girls and a lot of drugs...

Oh, and as for F1 2010...meh...in typical Codie fashion, they spent more time trying to get the drivers names spelt right and the rain effects to look super real than to make a suitable (read: drivable) AI for us single-player fanatics...

Ok, it's great that this day and age, multiplayer is pretty much status quo and all, but I hate when the development of said feature is detrimental to the rest of the game...

I don't like racing games. I haven't bought or played this game, nor do I plan too. I have nothing to add to this thread.

P.S.

The AI is scripted.

I think inference is not his sort of word, stick to band wagon, it's simpler and a lot more popular

What a bunch of BS. I was behind an AI car at the finishing line at top speed, not close enough for drafting, but not much more distant... When we crossed the line, the AI car was supposedly 3seg ahead of... 3 Seconds my ***! He was 1 second away at most.

They go on to say in that post that the gaps your engineer tells you are bugged and wrong.

So because you say it's so it must be.

Given that I am recounting my own experience, yes it must be.

I'm sorry that you don't grasp how observations work.

The line "Oh but dear God is it ever obvious that the cars ARE following scripted, linear paths." isn't your observations, it's an assumption about the game that your observations have led you to. You claim that this is inherent to the game, actually coded in to it. That's my observation, am I doing it right?

I don't know about Zardoz, but all hail Sean Connery in a Red Thong!

he was probably speaking about your inference, not your observation

do you know how inferences work?

Not scripted in any way? All computer AI at this point is entirely scripted. It's not AI at all.

What he means is its not following a scripted, linear path. The AI is making decisions based on the factors he stated, which means the same car should not behave the same in any two races, which they don't.

Oh but dear God is it ever obvious that the cars ARE following scripted, linear paths. In 7 races, I have yet to see a single car deviate off the perfect line. Ever. Even in the rain. In fact, I've seen one car hit and continue to bump the rear end of another car instead of doing the logical thing of overtaking the slower car.

So because you say it's so it must be.

Well i've played a fair bit and had plenty, cars spinning off in front, behind, poor moves etc. Seems pretty random and not totally scriipted at all.

Still it's a shame not to jump on the old bandwagon while it's going by eh.
