Star Trek Deep Space Nine MMOG Announced

Gameforge announces Star Trek – Infinite Space, a free-to-play casual MMOG based on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The game will be playable in a browser, and they expect it to launch next summer. There's no detail on the game at this point, though they do tout the bona fides of its developers: "Gameforge tapped keen games to develop the title in conjunction with expert Star Trek consultants Denise and Michael Okuda. Based out of Frankfurt, Germany, keen games is one of the country’s most established game developers with more than 17 years of experience working with numerous publishers in the industry."

Are you really Cthulhu? If so, how did you get internet access in R'lyeh? Shoggoth LAN server?

I'm actually re-reading the complete works of Lovecraft atm - available on iBooks as two volumes at 99 cents apiece. Bargain!

I can't imagine the DS9 storyline being a good basis to make a MMOG. Basically there isn't much open ended which could be explored.

So it would have to be something totally new, that's a huge risk. I will give it a try though.
Did you forget about the Gamma Quadrant....? That's a whole largly untapped 1/4th of the Galaxy that they had barely began to explore before they stumbled across the Dominion.....

OMFG. I havent even finished reading the title and I'm excited as hell. This COULD be awesome.
edit: F2P, causal browser micro-trans farmville clone. How tedious. Why can't they let indie devs like me do a gratuitous deep space nine game. I'd do the IP some justice, swarms of klingon battlecruisers ahoy...

Cliffski, why don't ya throw Viacom a email or 2 and see if they'd let you do a Star Trek version of your game? When I first saw GSB's the first thing that came to mind was 'I sooo want Star Trek mod for this!'.

I am huge fan of DS9, the best thing that could have happened after TNG, but I can't imagine the DS9 storyline being a good basis to make a MMOG. Basically there isn't much open ended which could be explored.

So it would have to be something totally new, that's a huge risk. I will give it a try though.

Still I would rather see a FPS/Adventure like game like the Voyager series, which I think we're pretty good and polished for that time. But then I guess it would turn out to be a console port, so the corridors of DS9 would now suddenly have lot's of obstacles to crouch behind

My biggest complaint however is that the current franchise is lacking direction, alternate time lines/realities, pff. Just get some excellent quality writers and actors (preferably stage actors) which have a passion for Star Trek and a new series will breathe the life back in the franchise.

DS9 was like the least casual of Star Trek series.

Deep space 9 was pretty good. It reminded me a lot of Babylon 5. But Babylon 5 didn't have Jeffrey Combs (he played Weyoun and Brunt on DS9 and Shran on Enterprise).

A MMO based on the most story-driven Trek seems like a destined dud.

Edit: Ha I guess he was in one episode of Babylon 5.

On the reverse, DS9 did not have Peter Jurasik or Andreas Katsulas, two of the best actors of all time.

But yes, I really did like Jeffery Combs characters in the Star Trek universe.

How the hell do you make a CASUAL MMOG based on the darkest, grittiest, most hardcore of all Star Trek settings???

Viacom just can't try hard enough to absolutely fucking MURDER the franchise, it seems.

Let's see:
- TV series IP (as everyone knows, tv series based games are ALWAYS top notch *grin*)
- unknown developer (who are they ??)
- cheap "casual" browser game
- tack a "MMO" over that for the hype and to attract investor capital
Yep, depressing as usual.
It will fall in the depths of oblivion at warp 10.

Free-to-play is good, in a browser is...well, debatable, and the IP is very well known. A recipe for success? Based on STO I predict mediocrity or abject failure.
