On the GOG.com Hoax

GOG.com has three of the four promised new videos dealing with the "revival" of the DRM-free online marketplace after its self-inflicted wounds. Also, PC Gamer has a statement from the service responding to the widespread unhappiness users have expressed at their implication that the service was coming to an end, offering another apology with a creative 'we're sorry... look, a pony!' approach, saying: "First of all we’d like to apologize to everyone who felt deceived or harmed in any way by the closedown of GOG.com. As a small company we don’t have a huge marketing budget and this why [sic] we could not miss a chance to generate some buzz around an event as big as launching a brand new version of our website and even more important [sic], bringing back Baldur’s Gate to life!"

Well, until someone else steps up to the plate, GOG is it. So you better start showing some respect!

No, the world doesn't need GOG.
But it does need more DRM-free services

Or just pirate the sh*t out of it, right?

No. If you enjoy the game, buy it. If you don't enjoy it, don't buy it. I think you may have completely missed the point of my post.

Wow, the net is abuzz with negativity towards GOG. Way to squander the near universal praise and trust you worked so hard to gain guys. First Stardock and now CD Projekt. Hopefully people will get over it and continue to support them though. The world needs GOG.

It looks nice but not as different as one might assume. I'll wait for some community reaction on Baldur's Gate to see if it runs with much less hassle than my retail copy... if it's improved in some way I might buy it as a sign of support.

They say "only the begining" and I hope that is true.

I already own an original copy of BG 1 + Exp & BG II, what do I get out of this?
Exactly.

Man, they just used incredibly poor judgment on this. Even the apology seems a bit off. Weirdos.

Marketing and PR skyrocketed in the 90's but this is really breaking the final frontier. Whats next? Extortion?

Yeah, it begs the question of what happens when CD Projekt actually has financial difficulty? Hope you've got backups.

Meh, I'll give my money to someone else. I don't reward a company who acts like an 8 year old and thinks that the boy who cried wolf is a PR strategy.

Seems pretty obvious they don't take their business seriously. I'll stick to Steam.

Oh the lovely lovely irony of it all - first they fake their death to get PR, and then all that PR breaks their servers and they are really dead!

That said - i can get to the login, but not actually log in

No, thats on purpose. A PR stunt!

Just came back up. BG prominently displayed on the front page.

EDIT: Or not. Guess they are still working it.

It doesn't take a "huge marketing budget" to realize you don't pull the wool over your eyes to screw with your customers. Not a bright move and I wouldn't be surprise if this alienates current customers as well as new ones. I sure as heck won't be buying games from them.

If you enjoy a game, buy it at the price it deserves and make sure that money goes to those who made the game, even if that's not the cheapest route. In the long-term, this will lead to the creation of more games that you enjoy.

I am sure GOG.com is grateful for all this free advertising on BluesNews with all these constant updates on their PR stunt.

It appears if you want free advertising on BluesNews you can save money by simply creating controversy instead of paying for ads.
