The fact of the matter is if Steam had pulled the exact same stunt and shut down for 3-4 days, the amount of bitching and bad press would be epic.
To me it's in poor taste, but everyone roots for the little guy so they can't do no wrong.
Admittedly, if steam shut down for four days, people couldn't play any of their games for four days. (barring offline mode.) So I'd argue that the bitching would be well deserved at that point.
I've got the .exes of all the games I bought from GOG, so this didn't really bother me, but yeah, as a marketing ploy it's still pretty fucking stupid.
