Agreed.
I've been enjoying it for months, for the first time in a long time (for a FPS), since getting burnt out by all the CoD4 exploits.
It's not that I can't setup a BSD box and host some shooter on the DMZ at work, to play on at home during the weekends for fun and without worry of upload packet latency or user capacity. It's that I don't want to bother with taking care of it anymore. Let someone else do it. For cheap. Or free - Both options available here, people.
The business structure has more related with the "Cloud Computing" bandwagon or the support services market for distros (e.g. Redhat) than it does DRM-type draconian models. You're fundamentally outsourcing your time that would have been spent to administer the oversight of exploits, bandwidth, server farm maintenance, (large) database of stats, etc. for nickels.
The game is very fun and nostalgic, lower the cynicism (and trolling); this isn't remotely close to an abhorrent, always-on, trigger-happy perpetual DRM systemic bile that is on the market. Nor is it like the "you pay for half the game and then 'upgrade' to the other half, after you buy it" scheme.
This is an attempt at an alternative business model that is reasonable, in the sense that they are selling you services and headache-bane, not just a toy. Considering the constant, mass leveraging of exploits for griefing or just general pathetic cheating in everything else today, I welcome new ideas such as this. The main downside is lack of mods support. That's the trade for maintenance and anti-cheats, however. At least, it is for now.
Just because the game mechanics are well accustomed, doesn't mean they shouldn't be well refined. And, unless you're Tim Schafer or Bioware, I don't care to pay attention to "yet another attempt (tM)" to reinvent the wheel. Go frag somethin'.

Ok, so it's a refurbished antique. It's still and antique and not one worth paying for by todays standards...for most people at any rate. |

This is a MULTI-PLAYER game. The whole point of QuakeLive is to play ONLINE against OTHER PEOPLE.
If you wanted a OFF-LINE version, you could buy Quake 3 for near nothing. |

Nobody will own games in the physical sense and they will only be accessed online and we will pay fees to play them.
Embrace it. persistent online access is the alternative DRM and im not going to support it. even steam allows players to game offline. |

QuakeLive isn't Quake 3.
They've rewritten a fair chunk of code, fixed many flaws and exploits of the engine, improved the graphics and built in unlagged code.
Not to mention the main point behind the project, running it via a web browser, with wordwide global player statistics. The quake communities died off as only dedicated fans paid for servers, with this business model it should stay running as long as players want to play, without decreases in service level or lack of updates, there is no 'ship-and-run'.
It's completely free to get an account and play on 50 odd maps and 9 game modes, paid accounts get access to new 20 new maps, Freezetag and some other things. Parts of the paid accounts will probably trickle down to the free accounts later when premium accounts get more updates.
Checkout http://www.quake-live.tv/ to see the state of the community. |

What happen to all the servers, fans ran?
You can still find several original Unreal Coop, Deathmatch and CTF servers. |
