I'd seen it on Steam, and thought "meh, adventure game" but now I'll have to at least give it another look.

You are comparing to one of the best immersion games ever made (although the 2nd opus tops it), and you are even citing the very peak of this game.. Funny you mention that because if this game even modestly compares to that experience, then it's already fucking great. I'll join the choir and shout go Amnesia, they deserve the top rank for a few weeks at least. May that be a lesson for developers who'd want to make PC games. |

Amnesia deserves all the love it gets because it's reminds me of how awesome PC games once were and how awesome the indie movement is right now. Easily one of the best, if not the best, PC game to come out in this year. A very unique experience and one that will challenge your sanity. |

| Amnesia is pretty crazy so far, really enjoying it. Reminds me of my first time playing Clive Barker's Undying with less jump fright and more terrifying atmosphere. |

My disgust over not being able to get Thief 3 to run on Windows 7 just for the level is strong. Seconded, and thirded. Shalebridge Cradle is, to this day, one of the scariest sections of any videogame I've ever played. I had sort of the same context as you when playing it, minus the Halloween-part. Late in the evening during winter, completely dark outside and rather chilly inside. A sort of seasonal force-feedback if you will
Buying Amnesia when I get home from work today, but think I'll save it up for when it's properly dark outside again. It's a free atmosphere-boost for games like this. |

After so many years, Amnesia is something pretty special too. I give Frictional my heartfelt congrats on the initial success of the game.
Edit: Also, thank you Jerykk for your post in this thread I immediately checked the link, watched the trailer and was convinced enough to preorder the game because of it. Well played.

Copy/Paste of my videosift post regarding this game:
Bought, played (at night with headphones) and beaten.
Just get the negatives out of the way first: too short & I still found Shalebridge Cradle from Thief 3 scarier/moodier/ more atmospheric than anything this game had to offer.
Positives: Just about everything else. I did enjoy this game better than anything from Penumbra. For me it's no Shalebridge, but damn for $20 and so many years after that experience in Thief 3 this was a joy. I'm glad there are developers out there willing to take risks with these kinds of games.
This game was almost canceled several times, for more information please visit the Frictional Games forums. This game seriously nearly died a number of times. I'm thankful it didn't.
Support Frictional, buy this game and enjoy it. Play at night, with headphones as suggested by the development team. Let yourself get immersed by this game, and don't try playing it like an FPS. Support them, and hopefully they continue to make games of this quality at such a bargain price.

Did sort of a double take when I saw Recettear on there, just about the same double take I did when I saw Steam started selling it a few days ago. I still remember a couple of years ago when everyone at the somethingawful forums were begging for an English patch, now that it's finally here I'm not quite sure what to feel.
Next thing I know, ZUN will finally break down and release Touhou games on Steam as well. |

Now trying to stabilize my real-life sanity, can't seem to find any puzzles to solve around the apartment though. Is it that good? I watched the video - looks pretty cool.... You definetly need to be a fan of the genre. I have a few friends who wouldn't be able to get past the lack of combat. But for someone who grew up playing adventure games and stuff like The 7th Guest and Shivers this game is exceptional.
Great atmosphere and graphics, average puzzles, and super creepy. |

I think it is. I'm about 8 hours in so far and loving just about everything about it. I don't really know how long the game is though as I'm trying to stay away from the Steam forums and any spoilers.
I just broke out a pen and paper to map out one level as I kept getting hopelessly turned around. In these days of auto-map, I haven't had to do that in a long, long time.
Great game! |

| Another cool thing about helping Amnesia and social sites + word of mouth. I always post videos to Videosift - never ever got anything to interest people enough to get to the top 15. Not that that really matters at all but it was interesting to note that the Elder Geek video review got the #1 top spot at Videosift. Maybe some of you helped with that? |

Evidently the 9.99 price was a mistake. I purchased it at 9.99 and got to keep it :}
Also according to the steam forums the expansion was playable for an hour or so after it went up for sale. Wasn't able to verify it myself. |
