If your going VIP, you have to give a credit card, but you can imeadatly cancel after you first payment, if that's your concern.
However if your concern is you don't have a credit card, you can go to walmart, pay $3 US, then put $14.99 on it and use it. It's a temporary card, but you do have to have a drivers license and a mailing address, that matches. You log into walmart's card site give the information and it activates your card immediately.
If you want to hang on to the card they send you a replacement in the mail, which you can go and add money anytime for $3 each time. No clue if there is a limit on how much you can add at once. |

Ant wrote on Sep 5, 2010, 22:21: So you can buy the retail game and not give credit card #? Okay, I think I'm understanding your concern here. Yeah, that's though to say. Buying the retail game might obligate you to enter payment information, while downloading the client may not. I was thinking that you may be able to link the retail game key to your Turbine account and then be presented with some options, VIP by entering in a method of payment or premium without. I'm surprised that question wasn't answered in anything I've read. |

I don't see anything that specifically says it though. So you can buy the retail game and not give credit card #? |

I tried the trial, and was pretty heavy into wow at the time. So I didn't spend too much time playing it. I'm going back to school this semester, and not playing wow until cataclysm comes out. Hopefully I won't feel pressured into playing like I had felt with wow (to get my moneys worth) And hopefully I wont let it detract me from classes |

I'm having a great time as pay to play, this is my first month playing LotRO and I only wish I had started earlier.
The F2P, sounds pretty limiting, so I will stay P2P or Premium at least. It's not nearly as bad as EQ2 is/was but not as good as Ruins of Magic or Requiem. http://www.lotro.com/betasignup/vipchart.html
Yes, if you buy/own the game, that makes you Premium, afaik all you need to do is spend something in the store or a Turbine Point card and you automatically become Premium. It's pretty much the way D&D works, too. |

| One of the biggest problems with this game is level distribution - there are never enough players at a given level to do group content. It amounts to being locked out of most of the best content in the game. It will be nice if FtP populates the servers. I've played this game on and off for over a year and I've never made it past that damned tree in Garth Agarwen. |

| It's using the same F2P model that they're using for DDO, which works just fine for me. |

There's a FAQ on the official LOTRO site that might answer some questions.
And in that FAQ, there's a link to this:
All the details about the features and benefits of Free players, Premium players, and VIPs, are listed HERE. Sounds like the usual F2P limitations on inventory space, character slots, chat, AH, etc. But, yeah, like mlw said, I think every server will be F2P so you can use your exiting characters. |

My understanding is that all servers will be free to play. There are some limitations to this model and you may purchase through the cash shop for these other perks.
I have several toons from a couple month subscription last year and should have access to play all of them. They are creating 4 new servers for new character creations also. |

| Has anyone found out what the catch is? Those of us with old toons on multiple servers won't be allowed to use them on the FTP servers will we? Though as long as the FTP servers are not lacking tons of features then I guess it won't matter... we'll just have to start new toons. |

| I'll be playing this too - already got a character on Brandywine server. I couldn't justify paying each month, but a F2P model makes it much easier. |

I always liked the game. Not enough to make me want to pay to play, but I'll be spending some time here for now...at least till Civ 5 launches. |
