Valve Plans 3 "Big Surprises"

Valve is promising "at least" three "big surprises" over the next 12 months, reports Computer and Video Games based on an interview with Valve's Gabe Newell in the brand new print issue of PC Gamer UK. "I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop any time soon. I'm just laughing because... people will be shocked again," Newell told PC Gamer. "We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least." Thanks joao.

I for one do not look forward to a new engine. I don't think they have the balls to come up with something truly next gen, as the consoles wouldn't run it well with their outdated graphics cards.

I expect something more like Crytek's farce of a new engine (crytek 3 seems more like crytek 2 more efficient).

There new engine and games for it, if they were to announce it, will be be out for another 10 years. By then, we will already have 2 more generations of consoles. So no worries.

Unless It's Half Life 3 and two expansions for it, Gabe Newell can go choke on a donut.

I would bet whatever the next Half-Life is it has multiplayer, which is one of the big surprises. I'm pretty sure Valve view multiplayer through Steamworks as what keeps their piracy numbers in check.

This would seem to be a pretty safe bet (except for the 'next Half-Life' part ) seeing as how every HL has included multiplayer (ignoring episodes, but technically the multiplayer of HL2 could be used as an example). Or am I missing some sarcasm here?

I take it, one will be a new Half-Life (Main moneymaker)
Followed by a source game of sorts, L4D (good bet)or something similar.(might even be that Movie they are attempting to make themselves)
then a NEW ENGINE... cause they don't want to fall to far behind ID, or Epic.

Yeah, I'm not so sure Half-Life is their big moneymaker. I'd say Steam is their big moneymaker. And frankly, I don't place too much value on Eps 3. If it comes out, fine. If not, that's cool too. I'm much more excited by Portal 2 these days. And I'm betting Valve is too, seeing that's what they've been working on all this time.

I'm not complaining, unlike the rest of you jackals.

Prediciton...

Surprise #1 - DoTA announcement (but not really a surprise we already know about it, but not officially announced)

Surprise #2 - Half Life 3 (ep3) almost done.

Surprise #3 - Portal 2, DoTA, and HL3 all released in the same box in Spring 2011...later delayed to Fall 2011

FFS! Even Valve are getting in on the "zero content" announcement of future announcements!

Worse than that, this is almost certainly an announcement about future announcements about future projects, which tend to have a lifecycle of several years (give or take Valve Time).

Valve aren't even a public company, so this kind of announcement achieves nothing, not even artificially inflating the share price.

It'd just take another 15 years to be done.

HL2 ep3 (or just hl3). L4d3, since a year was kinda short between releases last time, this time it will be 14 months.
And what else...

We admit that the episodic idea didn't pan out as expected, that's why we've taken a new dynamic shift with the Half-Life series! No more Episode 3, say hello to Half-Life: Mine Craft (pt1)! Now you can play in a dynamic open world while we take half a lifetime to make the next installment!

Gordon Freeman finds himself in a strange Xen landscape, where he'll need to craft crowbars and other useful items and weapons to survive the night.

Dig and dig while you search for Alex buried somewhere deep in on of the uniquely generated mountains!

Nice. I was just playing minecraft yesterday.
And speaking of gordon & hl2, 10 mins ago I was watching "freeman's mind" on youtube. Fun stuff.

Oh wait, didn't that minecraft guy said he was in talks with valve? #3 really COULD be half life minecraft!

"L4D3 will be released in Nov 2010"

That's the first, the second is, "L4D4 will be released in October 2010."

The third will be, "We've cancelled the Half-Life franchise, we are focusing our efforts on continually putting L4D in new boxes with incremental numbers."

Seriously, I love Valve, I do. I think all gamers do. But we are all dying for something HL related, and it seems like they are everywhere but there.
