Out of the Blue

The Emmy Winners were announced last night, rewarding our favorite new comedy, Modern Family, with best comedy series. Two dramas we keep meaning to catch up with were also honored, Mad Men and Breaking Bad; we first saw each after they were underway, and decided to catch up from the beginning. We actually have a couple of seasons of Mad Men on DVD, and are greatly looking forward to watching, though we better get on it soon, as I think each show is already in its fourth season, so we already have quite the backlog built up.

I need to give Mad Men another try. I've watched the first episode a few times but it never really got its claws into me. Going to have to try to get a little further with it this time...
Same here. I was falling asleep. Do the later episodes get any more interesting? The style and looks are fine to me.

Yay for Jim Parsons for his win in Big Bang Theory. Go nerds/geeks even though he was an actor.

Yeah, baby! I'm so stoked. It's going to be so cool seeing Aaron Rodgers win his first Superbowl this year.

I really enjoyed "The Office" for a couple of seasons. I can't stand it anymore, I don't know if I'm tired of Steve Carrell or the show in its entirety but I just can't sit through it anymore.

I thought The Office was great in the first couple seasons, but it has gotten really stale. I think the show would be much better if they would drop the whole "documentary" premise. Why would there be people filming a documentary for so many years? And then all the times where questions were being asked by corporate.. why do they need to ask anything at all when they have the entire thing on tape?? None of it makes any sense. It's especially annoying when people look directly into the camera.

I can only watch comedy TV shows that don't have a laugh track.

THIS!! I can't stand laugh tracks and I refuse to watch any show that has one. I don't need a cue to laugh. I don't need to be told, "This is funny." Are there people who could actually be laughing as much as this laugh track implies? Come on! Laugh tracks are loud, obnoxious, annoying and completely unnecessary. Producers need to wake up.

Defintely.

I was a real late comer to the show. I heard about it and thought someone said Danny Davito was on it but I don't watch that station often so I never bothered.

I caught some rerun one day and I was hooked. I think my first episode was when the gang was being held hostage and the bar, and Frank (Danny Davito) went "Die Hard" for the episode. The slow motion "climax" towards the end almost made me spit out my drink.

It's a great comedy, nothing cerebral but way better than most of the other sitcoms out there.

Still, Better off Ted was my favorite. Poor show

I play a few times a year, maybe once per quarter I'll buy $5 worth. Very rarely (once every 2 years) I'll splurge $20 on some Pick 6 and some scratch-offs.

I know I won't win, but it's nice to dream. I don't smoke or drink or do a bunch of other stuff that costs people money every week or day, so $20-$40 per year isn't too bad. Like all gambling, done without restraint and it can really mess up your finances. But every now and then it's fun.

I believe the posting is wrong though, I was always told expect 1/4 of the posted jackpot (assuming you're the sole winner) if you get a lump sum.

- The lump sum is usually 1/2 of the posted amount, full amount is over 20 years annuity if you chose it.
- Uncle Sam takes 1/2 of what's left

Then again, you do hear about how the lottery really screws people up. Either they blow it all away, or it destroys relationships (friends and family).

I did like the wedding episode and the after-effect Pam realizing Michael was doing her mom, but that's about it.

TV shows are like books: for every good work, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of horrible works. It's a matter of finding the gems in the manure.

I still find enjoyable TV shows, but too many of them stay on past their prime.

I don't watch TV, per se, but I've thoroughly enjoyed The Office on netflix...the best part is finding your own coworkers on the show. My current boss is a good 1/3rd to 1/2 Michael Scott, and he knows it...

Modern family portrays a family that would be considered modern 15-20 years ago in a format that is totally old school sit-com formula. I still like it even though I am never surprised by any jokes or situations. The power of good execution.

Network television knows no other way to do sitcoms. That's why I rely on movies and stand-up for comedy. TV is just not funny to me anymore.

I thought I'd file a report on BN following a trip with the kids to Coney Island yesterday.

I'm happy to report that Shoot the Freak is still in business. Nathan's Hotdogs will still sell you a big cup of red ale for 6 dollars. Also, this year they had outdoor karaoke in 95 degree heat. One woman pulled out an excellent rendition of Liza Minelli's Cabaret, and the crowd went wild.

Got to love the outer boroughs. Really fun weekend.

I caught the first few episodes and while I thought it was interesting and high-quality it just didn't grab me.

Maybe because it's not on a channel I view often so I just didn't notice it was on, but that's less of a factor now that I DVR shows all the time. So, who knows.

I think I might give it a shot, maybe just throw the discs on my Netflix queue.

Looking more extensively through the list, several of my favorites won. The Pacific is the second best miniseries I'd ever seen. Though I was disappointed that James Badge Dale wasn't nominated (he played Leckie.) Also nice to see Temple Grandin win, that was a fantastic HBO movie and Claire Danes for her roll in it.

I cant say I've seen Modern Family, but I'll have to give it a try.

Personally glad to see The Daily Show won for best variety/music/comedy series. This is what, 8 or 9 times strait? Course if you consider their competition it's the obvious choice. John Stewart and the Daily Show stand head and shoulders above their competition in every way, from content, intelligence, wit and prevalence.

Most of the late night shows boil down to a few relatively prevalent laughs and the same interview every night with a different actor or musician. They must get boring for the host if you ask me. Set up funny situation for the guest, ask funny question, plug their next movie/show/album, repeat the next night. With the daily show you never know what to expect, and John's interviews are 'never' those same 5 questions every other late night show asks.

Congrats to the Daily Show for once again proving your dominance.
