Lineage II Addict Lawsuit

A federal judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed against NCsoft by Craig Smallwood of Hawaii, who is seeking unspecified damages, claiming he was so addicted to Lineage II he was "unable to function independently in usual daily activities such as getting up, getting dressed, bathing or communicating with family and friends." Wired reports Smallwood played the game for 20,000 hours between 2004 and 2009, and he claims NCsoft "acted negligently in failing to warn or instruct or adequately warn or instruct plaintiff and other players of Lineage II of its dangerous and defective characteristics, and of the safe and proper method of using the game." Thanks Ant via Slashdot.

He became abnormally addicted to Lineage II because no girl would date a dude with the last name Smallwood.

Funny.

Won't go well. There's been already a precedent set for people suing Blizzard for World of Warcraft addiction.

As soon as the judge taps into the precedent files, it's game over.

It's like blaming a condom company for becoming addicted to sex. He's blaming NCsoft for an inherent human quality. His mindset (or his lawyer's) is that of a statist - one where personal responsibility is not practiced. With the freedom to play games you want, comes responsibility.

Not quite an accurate analogy. You don't need a condom to have sex. But yeah. This is dumb, frivolous bullshit. I hope he gets NOTHING and has to pay out the ass for being a complete fucking retard.

This is worse than piracy, imo. At least if he had pirated the game, he wouldn't have been attempting to steal lots of money from the game's creator. This guy should be thrown the fuck in prison for wasting everyone's time.

Actually it's quite a good analogy. You don't need video games to have fun, they facilitate fun. Same thing with condoms, don't need them to have intercourse, but they can facilitate it.

And I'm surprised they're actually letting this go to court, that alcoholism analogy was just about spot on.

This judge needs to be impeached. He's as much of an idiot as the asshat who brought the suit in the first place.

This lawsuit is based on the fact his account was terminated for trading money for in-game currency. Just looked through the ncdefence pdf. Awesome stuff! Hope he has to pay them 3mil he tried suing for.

Iirc it does give out regular (hourly?) warnings or health advice to take breaks at least.

Dunno what MMO's you play but every one that I've played in the last 5 years has some type of statement saying "game may be addictive, go outside"

There's no warning on cars that say if you don't fill them up with gas they will die on the side of the road.

There's no warning on CDs that says if you listen to these bands you might become hopelessly addicted to their music, and in turn buy all their albums, go to their concerts and buy all their merch.

There's no warning on TV shows that says if you watch said show you might become extremely addicted to them.
