I almost missed that STALKER deal. I clicked the link yesterday, but saw $29.99 in green and mistook it for the sale price. I already have SoC on disk that I bought when it was released, and I bought Clear Sky during a previous sale. Call of Pripyat is $19.99 if you already own a STALKER game on Steam, so I didn't bother. I saw it pop up when I launched Steam today and looked closer to see that the $29.99 is the amount you save with the bundle, and the actual price for both games is $9.99.

So now I have all three STALKER games on Steam, and I can just store my old STALKER SoC disk for backup.

Am I the only one that ONLY uses Steam?

I guess eventually it is either on Steam, or the same price as Steam......even though I think digital distribution is great - these companies won't be around forever - and I am trying to minimize future loses....

I feel bad i don't use GOG.
I never will use EA.
And the others just kind of showed up one day....

I like Steam, but I only buy things from them if they're on sale. I still prefer to buy a disk, even if it is a Steamworks game that requires Steam. It's still quicker to install/reinstall from a disk than to download from Steam.

Why don't you use GoG? It's the easiest way to buy a game. You pay, you download and you install. There is no DRM, no client to run, no internet connection required except to download the game. The file is yours, backup it up for re-install later, install to as many systems as you want. As long as GoG is still around you can re-download it too. If a game is patched, they even release a new installer that will include the fully patched version (IL2 1946). If GoG ever closes, your installer files still work as long as you keep them backed up.

Isn't diversification the more usual way to minimize future losses?

Yep, can't have a sale list this long without me buying something.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

Perhaps the list, sorted by distributor? Though I worry that the 'On Sale' section may start claiming too much of Blue's time if steps like that are taken.

Prefer GamersGate over the Steamware crap any day. Steam tries to be too much in control of my game.

Fair enough. As you noted, however, they don't hide it. The DRM is listed right at the top, which is quite handy for those trying to avoid it.

You aren't going to find UFO ET Gold or the Stronghold collection for those prices anywhere else (digital download-wise), for example.

Many big titles go on sale there before anywhere else, including Steam. Personally, I love GG.

Yeah, but Steam did have UFO ET Gold for 50% off during the summer sale, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's cheaper still during the next big cumulative sale, even if it isn't ever going to be picked out specifically for a weekend sale. More importantly, Steam doesn't appear to include starforce like the GG version. That's my main reason for avoiding GG. Too many of their games include more DRM than anywhere else.

On the other hand, I don't doubt that Stronghold will be cheaper elsewhere someday -- it's carried by all the DD services and is a pretty big name, the sort of thing Steam could offer as a weekend deal -- but nowhere else advertises it as being DRM Free. It's one of the rare titles where GG actually seems to have less DRM than anywhere else, or at least has gone to the effort of noting it.

Gamersgate has got a lot of my gaming dollars. Admittedly they do weird shit like the aforementioned BC2 "sale" price being the current price everywhere else, but most of their sales are awesome. You aren't going to find UFO ET Gold or the Stronghold collection for those prices anywhere else (digital download-wise), for example.

gamersgate sucks

Yeah, they like to claim MSRP-drops as huge sales, 3 months after everybody else implemented them.

Not to mention the Spellforce selection. You can buy Spellforce 2 Gold (SF2 + expansion) and Spellforce Platinum (SF1 + all expansions) for $10 total, or you can buy them as a bundle for $15! Or you can buy the 5 parts individually for $7.50 each

Still, The Stronghold Collection for $7.50 is attractive. DRM-Free unlike any of the other download places advertising it, so it's maybe worth dealing with GamersGate's crappy downloader. And the retail box doesn't look like it's going to be dropping from $30 any time soon. Crusader is the sort of game you want the installer sitting around on your hard drive, just in case you're ever at a LAN party, and I wouldn't mind trying out some of the later ones I skipped. Maybe with Stronghold 3 on its way I should wait for bigger sales, though. I do have quite a backlog.
